Goldfish crackers, for many of us, are staples of the American childhood. I mean, I can still hear the jingle in my head now. They’re cheesy, salty, and oh-so snackable. What’s not to like? The only thing stopping me from going absolutely crazy buying Goldfish is the inevitable decision paralysis that strikes when I reach their aisle in the grocery store. At any given time, Goldfish has between 30 and 50 flavors in production. And, for me, that’s simply too many to choose from. Do I go for the tried-and-true classic flavors or reach for the more experimental flavors in adulthood? Does maturity mean we can’t shamelessly get basic nostalgic flavors anymore? I don’t think so.

So, without further ado, these are the top three Goldfish flavors we’ve ever tried with the endorsement of the Sporked team who will be joining you in shameless nostalgic snacking. 

Frank’s RedHot

Let’s say you are venturing into nurturing your “inner child” from the monotony of adult responsibility, but you’re intimidated and need to take a more gradual approach. To you, my friend, I present the Frank’s RedHot Goldfish collaboration. They’re surprisingly spicy and vinegary, true to the hot sauce of inspiration. But they’re toasty and easy to eat a lot of all the same. Packaged in the original shape of childhood snacking, they’re packed with bold, mature flavor. If the cheddar Goldfish seem too simple, these will blow you away.  

Zesty Ranch

These are built off the back of the original Goldfish. Not plain cheddar, but the originals that are like little fish-shaped saltines. That said, these are anything but plain. From the first second they hit your tongue, it’s like a savory ranch explosion on your palate. They’re herby, somehow creamy, and full of rich allium flavor. If you want a bold flavor that doesn’t leave your mouth tasting terrible hours after eating, these fit the bill perfectly. They’re not cheesy and not flavor-blasted, but they’re still blasted with flavor.  

Flavor-Blasted Xtra Cheddar

I think this one is kind of a given. When I started this journey through crackers, I made the conscious effort to put aside all my nostalgic attachment to this flavor―but when put against the best of what Goldfish has to offer, they held up. I think the best thing about them is that your Goldfish expectations are met immediately. The cheesy, toasty cheddar flavor is there, no doubt about it. And then on top of that, you get the brighter, tangier cheese-dust flavor the second you pop one into your mouth. It’s what the classic cheddar Goldfish tastes like, but amplified to be indisputably the most delicious and satisfying.
