This past weekend was host to the official start of the summer season. And what does that entail? Well, it is carnival season abound. This week’s Crumbl flavors have joined in on all of the summer fun―but one flavor in particular is ticking all of the summer carnival nostalgic flavor boxes. The flavor and question? Cotton candy, of course.

Naturally, on the back side of the solstice, I had to try out this perfectly themed flavor for myself. And, after tasting, here’s what I’m left thinking about.
The Cookie
Pros: First and foremost, this cookie excels with what I believe Crumbl is very best at: fun and beautiful decoration. The icing is a beautiful pale pink frosting and white frosting swirled together. And the blue and pink sprinkle topping adds in the nostalgic cotton candy shapes and colors of my youth. The texture of the cookie does appear to be a bit chunky though; therefore, it gives the illusion of being dry.
The colorful, white chocolate popping candy sprinkles on top were a delightful addition to the texture monotony. The texture was crispy, crunchy, and oh-so fun. The popping candy had a bit of a unique flavor, but what really stood out was just the flavor of white chocolate coating that gave it its loud color. They were interesting! But not interesting enough to make this a cookie worth getting.
Cons: Where I think Crumbl sometimes slacks is flavor execution and this cookie only furthered that theory. The cookie was not technically bad by any means, but it was disappointing. It’s such an iconic summer flavor. And I’ll be honest, I just expected more. The frosting itself tasted almost entirely of cream cheese frosting, which again, isn’t bad. I love cream cheese frosting. But the mild bubble gum flavor of the frosting wasn’t enough to convince me that it was anything but cream cheese frosting. It certainly wasn’t cotton candy cream cheese frosting, like it was advertised to be.
The cookie was, well, a sugar cookie. It was moist and tender and tasted of vanilla. Everything you want from a sugar cookie―if not a bit overly sweet in Crumbl’s usual fashion―but as far as a seasonal cookie goes, it wasn’t much to speak of.
Verdict: I’m honestly not terribly surprised that this cookie didn’t wow me. It wasn’t flavored like any specific variety of cotton candy, nor was it advertised to be. And plain cotton candy, at the end of the day, just tastes like hot sugar. The colors are fun and I’m sure a kid would go crazy over the festive decoration. It even looks a bit like a children’s carnival game in pattern! But unless you’re crazy for a sugar cookie covered in cream cheese frosting, I’d suggest you’d try out a different flavor of the week.
