Mountain Dew Is Finally Making Spicy Baja Blast

It isn’t every day we get a new spinoff of Mountain Dew Baja Blast, but it does seem to be happening more and more. After the OG dropped exclusively at Taco Bell in 2004, Mountain Dew waited seventeen years* to debut the first pair of non-Blast Baja flavors; since 2021, we’ve gotten at least two new variants starting with “Mountain Dew Baja” per year.

Last year saw the debut of Mountain Dew Baja Cabo Citrus, which has since joined the permanent Mountain Dew lineup–the first Baja Dew to do so since the original and zero-sugar variants. Taco Bell also dropped Baja Blast’s tropical purple sibling, Baja Midnight, as a permanent fountain offering last year. (We’re still waiting patiently for that Baja Midnight pie they promised us.)

2026 has brought us relatively little in the field of Baja developments outside of a slight reformulation of the aforementioned Cabo Citrus and a hotly anticipated but not wholly “new” glass-bottled Baja Blast made with cane sugar. We have not heard anything to suggest we’ll see a new Baja Dew variant drop this summer… until now.

What’s the new Mountain Dew Baja soda?

Mountain Dew Baja Leo is a brand-new zero sugar variation on everyone’s favorite friend of fast food. While the Baja family of flavors has spanned everything from lime to pineapple to mango, Baja Leo will be tackling an unexpected flavor concept: spicy. Per the announcement shared with us, Mountain Dew Baja Leo Zero Sugar tastes like a blend of spiced mango, chili lime, and black pepper.

I’ll hold judgment of the flavor until I get my hands on a can, but I’m not sold on the idea in the slightest. Mountain Dew has dabbled in the spicy soda space before, to extremely mixed reviews. I’m not sure spicy ever needs to enter the soda conversation, and it seems like Mountain Dew knows this might not be plausible as a wide release. Based on the release method, Mountain Dew Baja Leo Zero Sugar is targeting superfans only this time around.

How can I get Mountain Dew Baja Leo Zero Sugar for myself?

Per the announcement, Mountain Dew Baja Leo Zero Sugar will be sold exclusively through TikTok Shop starting at noon EST on August 12th in… 13-can bundles? Every bundle will contain one can of Mountain Dew Baja Leo Zero Sugar alongside a 12-pack of the classic full-sugar Mountain Dew Baja Blast. I’m looking forward to seeing hundreds of these bundles listed on eBay for obscene prices the evening of the 12th. We have to move towards a “randomized Mountain Dew trivia question before checkout” system for drops like this; we cannot let people who think scalping perishable “collectibles” is a real job win.
