I know what you’re thinking. Hey, you just wrote about these. And yes, I did. But that was just an announcement of the release of the donuts. Now? I’ve gotten my hands on them and oh boy, the excitement was pretty justified.

To recap, Krispy Kreme just released a line of three donuts that they’re calling Destination Desserts. They’re based on popular Latin American desserts. There’s tres leche, a spin on chocotorta, and a guava inspired one. So, just how did they taste? Let’s dive in.

Tres Leches-Inspired Doughnut

So again, this is an unglazed shell doughnut filled with tres leches Kreme, topped with sweet creme flavored buttercream, cake doughnut crumbs, and cinnamon. Seems like a winner right? Well… kinda. It was good―don’t get me wrong. But when I think of tres leche cake, I’m thinking something milky and sweet. This donut was kind of just a vanilla cream donut. Not bad by any means. But I’m not sure the tres leche vibe was really translating here. I got basically no cinnamon, so I really think upping that could’ve done a lot to make this better. It needed that punch of spice to make this stand out from a normal vanilla cream. This just didn’t feel like a special donut. It felt like this was just a regular donut from the regular menu.

Choco Dulce Cookie Crunch Doughnut

This is an unglazed shell doughnut filled with chocolate dulce cookie Kreme, dipped in chocolate icing and chocolate cookie crumbles, then topped with dulce de leche buttercream. This was my dream donut of this collection. I’m a sucker for chocolate, as well as caramel and dulce. So this seemed like it’d be a slam dunk favorite. It wasn’t quite that. It was, again, good. But didn’t feel particularly special. It kind of just came across as a cookies ‘n cream donut. I got basically no dulce flavor from it. And I love cookies ‘n cream. But I was promised dulce and I really wanted it.

Guava Cheesecake Doughnut

This is also an unglazed shell doughnut filled with cheesecake Kreme and guava filling, dipped in guava icing and topped with an icing drizzle and crunch. Now this one? This bad boy was the stand out. This was my favorite and I’m so getting a dozen of just them to eat. (I’m 100% serious, they were that good). Now I love guava. Guava churros and guava and cream cheese empanadas are unbeatable desserts and treats.

Krispy Kreme did such a good job capturing the sweetness and tropical vibes of the guava with just enough cream cheese to give it tang and richness. I was a little worried about the filling because the press release showed the filled as two fillings. So, I worried that there would be unbalanced bites. But that appears to have just been to show the different fillings in photos. The actual filling is mixed so you get a perfect blend of guava and cheesecake in every bite. If you’re not a fan of fruit fillings, I’d still highly recommend this one. The cream balances the fruitiness beautifully and it’s not the same experience as eating a jelly filled donut.

Our Verdict

I will say, I was a little disappointed in the size of the donuts. Especially since I loved the guava one so much, I would’ve loved a more substantive donut to enjoy. But, since I ate three very sugary donuts in one sitting, maybe it was for the best that they were the size they were. I will definitely be enjoying these until they’re gone. And then I’m going to start the petition to get the guava one put on the regular menu.

As a general side note, you will want to go earlier than you think to get these donuts. I went around 7PM the day they released and they were out. So, these are popular. Don’t wait around and think you’ll be safe, especially given that these are a limited time collection.
