5 Discontinued Costco Bakery Products We Desperately Want to See Return (RIP Olive Garden Dupe)

Costco’s bakery is legendary. Sure, it’s where you can grab a few loaves of bread, packs of tortillas, and even a decadent birthday cake (or everyday cake because really, who even needs a special occasion?). But your local Costco’s bakery is also where some incredible treats come to life—like the viral Twice Baked Cinnamon Croissants.

Unfortunately, because Costco releases so many incredible baked goods throughout the year, every item can’t stick around forever. Some are seasonal, some are limited-time-only, and others stay in-store for over a year… but they just might wind up discontinued at any moment. And I’m still longing for one more taste of the following former bakery staples, hoping they’ll reappear for one more season at my local Costco.

French Toast Muffins

Two years ago, Costco’s muffin selection changed forever. Okay, that’s a bit dramatic, but in late 2024, the warehouse retailer overhauled its bakery department, and the muffin selection changed as part of the process. 

Prior to that overhaul, Costco’s muffins were so big and decadent that I rarely ate a whole one in a single sitting. But when I did, it was always one of the French Toast Muffins, which featured strong cinnamon flavor, plenty of sweetness, and a crunchy streusel-like topping finished off with ooey, gooey frosting touched by cinnamon.

These muffins disappeared and haven’t returned. Sure, they weren’t exactly the most nutritious pick, but they were so decadent that they were like having dessert for breakfast or brunch. And I still think about that crunchy topping every time I have a muffin.

All-American Chocolate Cake

We lost a lot during the COVID-19 pandemic, and this indulgent Costco dessert was one of them. The All-American Chocolate Cake was perhaps the ultimate chocolate cake—and I’m saying that as a notorious chocolate cake hater.

Yep, that’s right: I don’t even like chocolate cake and I loved the All-American Chocolate Cake. This massively dense cake was so rich, so chocolatey, and so fudgy that it was kind of impossible not to love. In fact, it was such a beloved bakery item that thousands of fans signed a petition begging Costco to bring it back.

Recently, Costco did try to bring a version of this iconic cake back in the form of the Chocolate Fudge Cake. However, the new iteration is smaller and not as decadent as the original.

Danish Mixed Pack

Technically, you can still find this item in your local Costco bakery, because the warehouse giant currently sells a Danish Mixed Pack that includes cherry, almond, or cream cheese filling. But, like the French Toast Muffins and All-American Chocolate Cake above, the original version of these Danishes were discontinued during the 2024 bakery overhaul. And boy, do I miss that first iteration.

The packaging has changed, and so, too, have the flavors. The original Danish Mixed Pack featured cherry, cream cheese, and blueberry filling—and you could pick up a pack of nine, not four or six. The texture of the Danish pastry itself also underwent a change, thanks to the updated recipe, and it’s simply not as good as I remember.

So, while technically this isn’t a discontinued Costco item, I’ve stopped grabbing today’s version because it doesn’t live up to the first. 

Banana Nut Muffins

I already raved about one Costco muffin above, but the French Toast Muffins weren’t the only incredible flavor we lost in the 2020s. We also said an unexpected goodbye to a longtime staple: Banana Nut Muffins.

I have fond memories of my dad letting me pick out this flavor to add to our muffin mix for special occasions, like camping trips and first days of school. Just as large, fluffy, and moist as their French Toast (and other) counterparts, these banana muffins packed plenty of flavor into every bite. And I could never get over the well-balanced banana paired with crunchy walnuts, an iconic pairing (just ask Ben & Jerry’s, creators of the banana-and-walnut Chunky Monkey ice cream).

After the 2024 bakery overhaul, this flavor never reappeared in Costco’s muffin lineup. And I’m still searching for a Banana Nut option that’s as good as the ol’ Costco recipe.

Garlic Buttered Bread

This bread appeared in a few iterations, including a Roasted Garlic Parmesan Bread, but the OG was so incredible that no other garlic breads can really live up to its flavor. Not even Olive Garden’s own iconic breadsticks can complete.

Costco’s Garlic Buttered Bread was exactly what it sounds like: a freshly-made loaf of bread with huge chunks of garlic in its dough, topped off with a thick smear of butter between its top and bottom slices. The bread was oven-ready and the perfect side to serve with, well, pretty much any meal if you’re a garlic lover or bread fan. 

And whether you toasted this bread at home or ate it right out of the packaging in your car (no judgement, because that butter was flawless), it was so satisfying. Packed with tons of garlic, it was a bread that needed nothing else. I still wish I could whip it out for a charcuterie spread or pasta night at home.
