In modern society the seasons are no longer determined by the weather or solstices. Instead, they’re of course determined by what’s on the shelves at the stores. Whether it’s Target’s seasonal section hopping straight over to Halloween after back to school ends or all the grocery stores jumping at the first chance to deliver us anything and everything pumpkin spiced, all the stores have officially declared it’s fall. It’s not just the beginning of the autumn spirit, though. Stores have claimed the season as if Halloween is next week.

And sure, that can be frustrating at times when it’s still 85 degrees out and you can still see the heat waves rippling off the pavement, but I have to admit that the snacks are pretty irresistible. This year, to mitigate some of that frustration, Haribo made sure to bring back one of the fan-favorite Haribo snacks for the Halloween season. It’s been long awaited by sour candy snack enthusiasts―it’s the Sour Bats.
Why They’re Such A Hit
Sour Bats from Haribo have a cult-like following, and honestly as an outsider it’s kind of difficult to understand why. I mean, everyone has their favorite candy but what actually makes them so special? For starters, they’re apparently just the right gummy texture and their sourness is distributed ideally. As opposed to a Sour Patch Kid or other sour gummies, Sour Bats are made with the sour all the way throughout the gummy, not just in a sour sugar coating. That way, the sour doesn’t really dissipate as you’re eating them.
The thing that makes them so special is that a good replacement for them doesn’t usually come in a bag with that sour goodness exclusively. Instead, they’re usually in big mixes or halves like the Twin Snakes or Sweet and Sour Hearts. Even the Sour Bats aren’t always easily located on their own and were initially released in mix bags with other Halloween gummies. People are so desperate to find a replacement that there’s been a four year-long Reddit thread trying to hunt down the best alternatives when Halloween isn’t in season.
How To Get Your Hands On Them
For the most part, it sounds like people are buying out stores when they see them on the shelves and creating as large of a personal supply as possible. Amazon shoppers have even been bulk buying the candies in pack of 12 bags for $30, with reviews saying how much they appreciation of being able to buy them off season.
The candies themselves are mixed fruit flavors and do not have any of that citric acid sugar coating. They’re sour to the core, and, most excitingly, they’ll officially be available soon. This year they’ll be available as individual bags and as part of the Halloween mixed bags, as well.
