The People Have Spoken: These Fast Food French Fries Are The Best Around

Which fast food chain has the best French fries? It’s a question that’s been answered with dozens of different options, and most fast food enthusiasts have an opinion on it. We’ve pitched in. You may well have pitched in. Countless others, throughout the years, have also pitched in. We have yet to achieve a true consensus on it.

Well, one organization claims to have the answer. A recent survey asked 2,500 people which fast food restaurant makes the best French fries, and the winner couldn’t be more clear. Sorry to anybody expecting a niche answer here.

McDonald’s. Yes: The most prominent fast food chain in the country, nay, the world, has been voted as having the best French fries by a survey conducted by High Risk Pay. Now, it’s worth mentioning that there are loads of surveys out there, held by various companies and organizations, so we of course can’t take this as gospel – but the sway towards McDonald’s in its results was very clear. High Risk Pay worked state-by-state, asking customers to vote for the restaurant with the best fries out of 20 options, and McDonald’s was voted the best in the vast majority of areas in the US (36 out of 50 states). Overall, it received a 7.3 out of 10 ranking for its French fries. 

There was a 0.6-point gap between McDonald’s and the next-best restaurants. Five Guys and Chick-fil-A came next, with 6.7 out of 10 rankings for each for their fries, while Arby’s came fourth, with a 6.2 out of 10. Rounding out the top 10 was Culver’s, with 5.8 out of 10. In between, Wendy’s, Checkers & Rally’s, Popeyes, In-N-Out, and Shake Shack also placed. Burger King and Raising Cane’s, meanwhile, missed out.

McDonald’s gets a loooot of criticism for pretty much everything it does (some of which is very justified), but I personally can’t resist the allure of its fries. When they’re good, they’re really good: Hot, crispy, salty, and surprisingly good for using in leftovers. Naturally, there are a lot of badly cooked batches out there, but generally speaking, I’m a fan – and when we rated the best fast food french fries a few weeks ago, McDonald’s came in as some of the best (although not THE best, interestingly: That went to another restaurant in the top running in High Risk Pay’s survey). Inevitably, I’m now hungry for some fried potatoes.
