Sonic just dropped a collection of banana drinks to stay on the hype of banana we’ve seen this year. And we tried them so that you know what is good and what isn’t. And honestly, it’s a little more surprising than you’d think.

So just what concoctions did Sonic come up with? They released a banana pudding shake, a blast, a slush, and a banana cream dirty Dr Pepper. Yeah, that last one caught us off guard, too. But if you think about it, banana and cherry isn’t that weird of a combo, so it might not be as weird as it would seem. At least that’s what I was telling myself when I put in an order for these drinks and was very weary of the DP (and I love Dr Pepper―for me to be scared of it is wild). Here are our thoughts.

Our Verdict

Banana Pudding Shake: This was my favorite of the bunch. It was so good. It was literally just the best Southern banana pudding you’ve ever had but frozen. Okay, maybe not quite that good. You can’t beat real Southern cooking, even when it comes to banana pudding. But it was really good for a fast food joint. So, for a quick grab? Absolutely would get again.

Banana Pudding Blast: Now, this has all the same ingredients as the shake, but it’s a little thicker. And whatever shake base they use makes the shake beat this ever so slightly. This is much truer to the banana pudding eating experience since this is thick and rich with ice cream and blended with the flavors. If I was handed another, I certainly wouldn’t say no to it.

Banana Dirty Dr Pepper: Now I was most skeptical of this drink. Banana, cream, and Dr Pepper just do not seem like the first or even the hundredth drink combo I’d ever think of. And I like to think that I’m pretty creative. But I kept an open mind and was… not surprised. It wasn’t terrible, for which I was very thankful. It was kind of exactly what it said on the tin. Banana, cream, and Dr Pepper. I don’t think I’d go reaching for it again. But it wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever had in my life.

Banana Pudding Cream Slush: This is the drink I should have been nervous about. This one? Disgusting. I had the smallest taste and nearly spit it out. It came across as weirdly sour for some reason? I don’t even know how that was managed. But it was gross. It was not a delightful little banana pudding memory. I wouldn’t serve this to my worst enemy.

All in all, if you’re a fan of banana pudding, I would certainly recommend a Sonic stop if you have a craving and don’t have a Southern grandma on call to make you up a fresh batch of banana pudding. Just stay away from that slush.
