Trader Joe’s prides itself on its canned fish selection – but what about its canned molluscs? Well, it’s fair to say they’ve kinda taken a backseat to its tuna, sardines, and salmon. Yes, it’s previously sold canned smoked oysters and prepared mussels, but it’s not made soft-bodied, sea-bound invertebrates the core of its product line, and for good reason. They just don’t quite have the same mainstream appeal or versatility as a can of albacore.

Its latest canned seafood drop, though, has been received very warmly by seafood fans. Trader Joe’s Razor Clams in Extra Virgin Olive Oil are here, and they’re a hit. If you eat them in the right way, that is.

Trader Joe’s Razor Clams in Extra Virgin Olive Oil

TJ’s has just dropped its Razor Clams in Extra Virgin Olive Oil in stores, and clam fans might want to grab this limited-time item before it disappears. At $5.99 per can, they’re not cheap in the slightest, but Trader Joe’s is clearly going for a touch of luxury here – and as several people have pointed out on Reddit, as razor clams go, that’s not a bad price.

Speaking of Reddit, over the last few days, plenty of folks on the website have been sharing their opinions of these canned clams, and the general consensus seems to be that they’re very good. “Although they don’t look pretty they were so yummy,” said one person. “Not chewy to me but some bite. Not too salty and not fishy. Would purchase again!” Another customer prepared them a similar way, and the accompanying picture they provided almost made me want to try them myself. I say “almost” because frankly I can’t stand clams, oysters, mussels, or any other mollusc – I just can’t get past the texture of them – but that’s my cross to bear.

Any Dissenting Opinions?

Funny you should ask! Yes – as with everything in life, Trader Joe’s Razor Clams in Extra Virgin Olive Oil haven’t been a universal win. A couple of people have said they can be a touch gritty, and if you’re eating them without any preparation, you might be underwhelmed. “I got these while I was in Philadelphia last week and didn’t really care for them. Granted, I ate them heated up without anything else but yeah, won’t be getting them again,” stated one less-than-enthusiastic response.

To be fair, that’s the case with virtually any other canned food; they need a bit of adornment to shine. Most other people seem to love these things, though, so if they’re speaking to ya, get them now.
