Your Favorite Ben & Jerry’s Flavor Just Got More Important

Ben & Jerry’s has never been shy or retiring when it comes to its views. The ice cream brand is well-known for its vocal stances on human rights and social justice (which came into view when we were discussing its former CEO, David Stever, moving to Jeni’s) and its refusal to keep quiet about what it believes is right. It’s also not one to avoid a promotion – see its summer ice cream bar giveaway for proof of this – so when those two things come together? Well, that’s harmony, baby!

That’s just happened at Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops around the country. The ice cream giant has just announced the return of its Waffle Lotta Good program, and your favorite waffle cone pick suddenly matters just that bit more.

Yesterday, Ben & Jerry’s revealed the return of its fundraising program, Waffle Lotta Good, a fundraising program. Waffle Lotta Good first launched in 2023, and each year it’s been remounted, it’s partnered with and supported different initiatives and grassroots organizations. 

This year, though, Ben & Jerry’s is defending the very concept of democracy itself. How it works is as follows: Every time a customer purchases a waffle cone – and as far as we can tell, you can opt for a plain one, a chocolate-dipped one, a salted caramel-dipped one, or any specials it might be running; your choice – it will donate $1 to support “civic engagement and democracy-related initiatives,” as per its press release. In the past, Waffle Lotta Good has raised six-figure sums for various organizations. 

For Ben & Jerry’s, it all starts in the community. “Grassroots organizing is the most powerful tool we have against the erosion of democracy,” said its social mission director, Carleen Pickard, in a press statement. “When customers buy a waffle cone, they are directly funding the community activists who build that power from the ground up; the people knocking on doors, registering voters, and ensuring that everyone has a voice in decisions that affect their lives. That is how democracy wins.”

Waffle Lotta Good isn’t running for long. The program started yesterday, September 28, and will be running through October 12.
