There are, as of today, 34 days until Thanksgiving – and if turkey isn’t top of mind yet, it might be time to start thinking about it. Whether you’re going for a Cajun-style turkey from Popeyes or a store-bought, protein-abundant centerpiece for your table, you’re going to want to make sure the bird’s locked in well before you get to the big day.

But this year, you may not even have to buy one…because they’re giving them away! Who’s “they,” you ask? That would be BJ’s Wholesale Club, which is bringing back its free turkey giveaway for another year. Just bear in mind that you might want to get in there early.
BJ’s Wholesale Club Turkey Giveaway
This week, BJ’s Wholesale Club announced the return of its annual turkey giveaway, which runs from October 31 through November 9. The concept is simple: If you spend a certain amount in one transaction, BJ’s will give you a coupon for a free fresh or frozen Butterball turkey, which you can then redeem from November 14 to November 25.
Now, free turkey is obviously rarely a bad thing – but there are a few caveats you need to consider. First off, the minimum spend for a coupon is fairly large: You have to buy $150 worth of goods before you’re eligible, and if previous years are anything to go by, tobacco, alcohol, and other items like gift cards won’t count. The turkey voucher also has a maximum value of $25, and it excludes organic turkeys. Naturally, you also have to be a BJ’s member to avail of this offer.
That said, if you’re in the market for a free bird, you don’t need anything absolutely massive, and you have an existing membership, this is a good offer. You might not be planning on spending $150 on your Thanksgiving meal, but take the opportunity to stock up on pantry and household goods and make a little saving in the process.
Just Make Sure You Move Quick…
This is a popular offer, and BJ’s stresses that supplies are limited – so you should step to it if you want to take advantage of this one. Don’t believe me? Heed the cautionary tales of customers from years past as a warning. “Last year we spent almost $400 on a BJs run. We went back the Friday before Thanksgiving and they had run out of turkeys,” said one person on Reddit. Frozen turkeys will likely disappear quicker than the fresh ones, too. Don’t be caught short for the big day.
