Just last week Trader Joe’s went ahead and added yet another form of chocolate chip cookie to their product portfolio. And listen, I know what you’re thinking: that’s totally unnecessary. They have just about every kind of chocolate chip cookie you could ever imagine. And while I would generally agree with you, I would add in the caveat that they found the one kind of cookie that they weren’t already producing.

“A Singular Chocolate Chip Cookie” came to Trader Joe’s shelves and immediately became a big topic of conversation. Fans of Trader Joe’s really didn’t know what to think about the cookie and certainly didn’t think that it was necessary. That’s where we here at Sporked come in. We knew we were going to have to get to the bottom of whether or not this cookie was even any good, and so we did exactly that. Without further ado, let’s get into our review of the newest chocolate chip cookie in the Trader Joe’s bakery section.

Our Official Thoughts

Pros — As soon as I took a bite into this cookie, I realized that it was going to be a way better experience than I had anticipated. Honestly, I immediately have some qualms with any store-bought cookie that’s supposed to be chewy or “gooey” that isn’t being baked fresh on-site. But the flavor of this far exceeded our expectations.

It is buttery and sweet, yet still balanced with a decent amount of salt. Plus, it is densely packed with high-quality tasting chocolate chips. The chocolate component of the cookie actually helps balance the sweetness since not all of the chocolate chips are milk chocolate. There are both semisweet chips and milk chocolate varieties, and there’s enough of them to really break up the cookie dough flavor.

But I think the thing that impressed us the most about this cookie overall is the texture. It actually has the texture of a freshly baked cookie. It is not at all stale, but it still tender and moist in the interior without feeling gummy or overly processed. If we really wanted a homemade-style chocolate chip cookie without having to go to a bakery or make one ourselves, this is certainly what we would be picking up. Heating this cookie up for just a a couple of seconds and topping it with scoop of vanilla ice cream would be out of this world.

Cons — The one slight note I would give this cookie is that it has a bit of a slight sour aftertaste. I really don’t hold it against this cookies since it has to maintain its texture through transport and mass distribution somehow. But that tangy aftertaste that you sometimes get with these prepackaged cookies is still slightly there. That said, it is far less than a lot of other chewy-style cookies that you can get at the grocery store.

The last thing we’ll say about this cookie is something that the Trader Joe’s employee actually mentioned to me as I was checking out. He said, “These cookies are great, but don’t believe the serving size on the back. There’s no way this is three portions.” And he’s right. It’s strange that they would advertise something basically as being a single serving and then go on to write the nutrition label as being three portions. It just didn’t quite sit right with me. I’d still get the cookie again, but I think it was a strange choice for Trader Joe’s or the supplier of this cookie to have made.
