This Aldi Cheese Is So Good, People Are Eating A Whole Block In One Go

Flavored cheese can be very hit-or-miss, in my experience and humble opinion. For every winner in the category, like Pepper Jack or (good) garlic and herb cream cheese, there’s a miss – and those misses usually come from food brands and manufacturers just doing way too much. That tends to happen when people are pairing already flavorful cheeses with add-ins that just make the whole thing clanging and messy. Leave that poor dairy alone. What has it ever done to you?

An added risk emerges when we’re talking about lower-cost flavored cheese, which may be priced as such because it hasn’t received the same rigor and care that more expensive ones have. At the moment, though, it seems like Aldi’s walking a tightrope of all of these things and has come out victorious with an affordable flavored cheddar that customers are continuing to fall head over heels for.

Aldi Emporium Selection Balsamic Onion Cheddar Cheese

This week, a Reddit thread has popped up in praise of Aldi’s Emporium Selection Balsamic Onion Cheddar Cheese – and customers have been flocking to it to discuss how good it is. I’m really not kidding. The title of the thread is, and I quote, “I want to eat so much of this cheese that I die,” and no less than two comments down, someone has stated that they “destroyed a block of that in one sitting last week no regrets.” In short, people love this thing – and they have done for years. 

I get it. Aldi’s Balsamic Onion Cheddar Cheese combines a rich, sharp cheddar with sweet-and-sour balsamic onions, for what is clearly a very multi-faceted, punchy flavor experience. One person in this year’s Reddit thread discussing it said that it tastes a little like French onion soup – and if that’s the case, I’m completely sold. The original poster also stated that they crumbled it onto a sausage pizza, which, again…sold. At $5.29 per 5.3 oz. block, it’s far from the cheapest cheese Aldi does, but this is the kind of thing you’d find for double the price at a farmer’s market or boutique store.

It is with more than a hint of pride that I note this cheese is imported from the UK – and look, I’m as staunch a critic of my country as any, but I’ll fully back our cheddar any day of the week. It also pains me that we don’t actually have this flavor over here; we have a pickled onion version, but that’s not quite the same or nearly as classy. Oh, well. One day.
