Redditor Spots Peeps for 9 Cents a Box at Aldi

How do you feel in the days after Easter? Do you find them rejuvenating? Freeing? Depressing? We can never quite gauge the response following the holiday: It’s not like Christmas, where you can be pretty sure that you’ll be filled with a low-level sense of sadness at the holiday joy almost being over, or New Year’s Day, where you can be fairly certain that you’ll have a sore head (don’t worry, you can cure that with pickle juice). Post-Easter, though, feels like a bit of a hinterland. What do you do after you’ve scarfed down all that pricey Easter candy?

If you’re anything like us, you buy more Easter candy in the days when you can be damn sure that it’ll be a lot less pricey. The weeks after Easter are a godsend for blink-and-you’ll-miss-them deals, and the latest, as seen on Reddit, is boxes of Peeps for nine cents. Nine cents. Run, don’t walk, to Aldi. 

There Are Deals…And Then There’s This

News of this deal reached Reddit after a user posted a picture of boxes of Peeps Marshmallow Chicks stacked high at Aldi, with the red price tag that indicates a discount on items at the store. And what a discount. Each box was (and presumably, still is) priced at just $0.09, and if you zoom in reeeeaaaaally far, which we obviously did, you’ll see that they were originally $1.49. That means they’re currently around one-sixteenth of the price that they were before. Which is a very good saving in a store that already offers some very good savings for customers.

In the Reddit picture, the crates that the Peeps came in were already looking a little empty – there were plenty of candies left, but around half of the boxes had already been swiped. This is very clearly a “once it’s gone, it’s gone” kinda deal, so we really wouldn’t wait around to get them. 

Stale Peeps? Whisper It: They’re Better

You’d think that people would be a bit more excited about candy for just nine cents, right? Well, in the comment section of the Reddit post, people were a little bit less enthused about the prospect of days-old Peeps. “Dude I’m surprised they aren’t paying YOU to take them away. 9¢ is way too much,” said one of the top-voted comments in the thread. Do these people not know a good thing when it comes their way?

Others, though, saw the value of a deal like this, if only because the Peeps will have already, hopefully, gone a little stale due to their age. That’s a good thing in a lot of folks’ books. “I know this is a controversial take, but nothing hits like the crunch of a stale Peep,” said a person in response to the above comment, and this view turned out not to be controversial at all: A lot of others chimed in, saying that they were fans of the candy when it was slightly more stale. Honestly, though, at that price, we’ll take anything.
