Do you like cereal? Do you like spelling? Do you like those fridge magnets that let you leave exceedingly out-of-pocket little poems on your friend’s refrigerator every time you visit and then they always notice it a week later and text you all angry, like, “Why does my fridge say, ‘Oops shart the biscuit, rebellion panda bear, scootillypoopie,’” and you have to explain that it’s actually a haiku and they need to get cultured and then they stop inviting you back?

Ehem, well, anyway, if any of that sounds familiar to you or if you grew up between the ’50s and ’00s, then you will be pleased to know that you can once again taste the alphabet, because Alpha Bits—yes, of “a story in every bowl” fame—are back, retro packaging and all, for a limited time only.

What happened to Alpha Bits to begin with and how can we get our hands on a box of these crispy, crunchy breakfast letters?

Alpha Bits have been around off and on since 1957. Their most recent appearance in grocery stores was back in 2012, when they released a themed box with characters from the kids show Super Why. There have been versions throughout the years boasting “new and improved formulas,” but if you’ve never had Alpha Bits before, you can expect letters made of made of whole grain oats and corn, lightly sweetened like Frosted Cheerios or Lucky Charms, but without the marshmallows (though there was, at some point, a version with marshmallows). The packaging itself is adorable and looks like a wide-ruled notebook covered in doodles, but definitely reminds me of some of the other packaging iterations from this cereal’s ~storied~ past.

According to Post, Alpha Bits will make their comeback in fall 2025, which makes a lot of sense. Back-to-school season, when Gilmore Girls-fueled nostalgia for the ’90s and early 2000s runs rampant—they could not have timed it better, if you ask me. Now, as for how limited edition these are, Post says that they will be “for sale in limited quantities,” so basically, if you want ‘em, grab ‘em when you see ‘em.

Long story short, I need these. I already have a plan. I want to spell out the word “trouble” using cereal, then yell “oh no!” Then, hopefully, my friend will run in from the other room just so I can point at the cereal all dramatic-like and say, “That? That spells trouble.” Then I’ll look closer and say, “Oh, never mind! Guess I’ve gotta eat my words.” Then I will eat the cereal and definitely not lose any friends over this very normal interaction.
