Mountain Dew Baja Blast is practically its own brand at this point. There are spinoff flavors and gelato and merch, and now there’s Baja Blast Pie at Taco Bell. I was at Taco Bell, ready to go right when they opened on the release day (November 6th) to secure my pie. Word on the street was that each location only had 12 pies on hand, and while there was some conflicting information about if restaurants were able to order additional pies or not, I wasn’t going to take my chances. After paying a cool $19.99 for a full pie, I’m ready to dive in to try not only the Baja Blast Pie, but also a recreation of the Baja Blast Pie Chiller that is only OFFICIALLY available at Live Mas Cafe locations in Texas and California.

Baja Blast Pie

Pros: I had my reservations, but this is pretty incredible. Picture a key lime pie that was Baja Blast-ified. It’s dense and tangy with a graham cracker crust. And the whipped cream around the edge of the pie ties the flavors of the key lime and Baja Blast together perfectly. I didn’t know if they could successfully “pie” Baja Blast, but pie it they did.

Cons: Taco Bell, I understand that not everything can stay on the menu all the time, however I do not understand why this release needed to be so incredibly limited! Why did each location only get a dozen or so pies? Why did I have to commit to a FULL pie rather than a slice? You’ve reeled me in and I want more and I can’t get more!

Baja Blast Pie Chiller!

Baja Blast Pie Chiller

To create a copycat Baja Blast Pie Chiller I blended one slice of Baja Blast pie, one cup of milk, three scoops of vanilla bean ice cream, then topped it with whipped cream and crushed up cinnamon twists.

Pros: The creaminess of the vanilla ice cream really elevates the flavors of the pie. Baja Blast, key lime pie, graham cracker, and ice cream feels like a wild combination of flavors to mix together, but good gosh do they work well. Forget the pie, add this to permanent menus everywhere, Taco Bell!

Cons: The fact that 95% of Taco Bell locations did not allow fans to experience this incredible dessert is an absolute tragedy. Baja Blast Pie Chiller is too good to be limited to a handful of stores.
