Best Brie: Say Bonjour to the 7 Best and Bloomiest

The best brie is soft, creamy, and a little funky. It’s great on its own or in a recipe. It’s typically the first cheese on the cheeseboard to disappear, and that’s because it’s sheer perfection.

Needless to say, I love brie! And who doesn’t? I have lactose-intolerant friends who will risk it all when they see brie as part of the party spread. Nothing on Earth beats brie wrapped in phyllo dough and baked to a golden brown.

We tried the most accessible brie cheeses on the market to see which are a must for cheese lovers and which bring the funk in the worst way possible. Scroll down and stock up!

Best of the Best

Trader Joe’s Triple Creme Brie

If you’re looking for a standard, flavorful brie that will please both cheese novices and cheese aficionados alike, grab a wedge of Trader Joe’s Triple Creme Brie. It is, hands down, the best cheese we tried in the realm of classic, conventional brie. It’s so creamy and the flavor is so pleasantly mild. This completely fulfills my desire to eat chunks of butter (anyone else have this?). When I think of brie, this is what comes to mind, and that’s why we’re naming it our best brie.

Best Funky

Trader Joe’s Le Delice de Bourgogne

Unlike the brie that took our number 1 spot, this brie turned all my expectations about this soft, French cheese on its head. That’s why it’s also the best brie in its own way. This tastes like if butter and funky blue cheese had a baby. It’s so pungent and ripe. If you like a funky cheese, this is definitely for you. Plus, it’s so, so soft that it’s practically a spread. This is the brie I will be buying from here on out. Delicate palates and cowards might want to steer clear, though.

Best for Cooking

Président Soft-Ripened Brie Wheel

Président’s Soft-Ripened Brie is perfect for concocting delicious appetizers. Is it good to eat by itself? Of course. Would it be even better draped in phyllo dough, topped with walnuts and cranberry marmalade, and baked until oozing? Absolutely! And it comes in a full wheel, unlike many of the other cheeses we tried that are sold by the wedge. This is definitely the best brie for cooking and I will be stocking up on it for the holiday season, because nothing says Christmas like baked brie.

Best for Brie Haters

Emporium Selection Soft Ripened Double Creme Brie

Emporium Selection Soft Ripened Double Cream Brie is the best brie for people who don’t really like brie. It’s so creamy and so mild. There’s no funk whatsoever. That being said, I like cheese as funky as it comes and I still enjoyed this brie! Sometimes you want something that isn’t going to blow out your palate, and that is definitely this brie. It would complement so many other flavors without overpowering anything. Spread it on a sandwich or toss it on a cheeseboard and tell me I’m wrong. Spoiler alert: You won’t.

Best Hard

Saint André Triple Crème Brie

Saint André Triple Crème Brie is made from cow’s milk, but in my opinion, you would never know. Blindfolded, I would’ve sworn it was goat’s milk cheese! That’s what is so interesting about this brie. It’s mild and salty. The texture is a little dry and crumbly (in a good way, don’t worry). This would be awesome sprinkled over a salad or some roasted veggies. I wasn’t expecting this cheese and it still managed to surpass my expectations. Nice!

Most Unique

Marin French Cheese Co Petite Breakfast Brie

If you want the most unique brie for your cheeseboard, grab a teeny, tiny wheel of Petite Breakfast Brie from the Marin French Cheese Co. This brie has no rind. I didn’t even know that was possible! It was very firm and mild, almost closer to provolone than a brie. I didn’t know I was missing this in my life, but now that I do I will be buying it regularly. Plus, it’s so cute! And don’t worry, it’s not just for breakfast.

Best Flavored

Trader Joe’s Triple Cream Brie Cheese With Green Peppercorns

I’ll say what no one else is brave enough to say: The flavored brie cheeses from Trader Joe’s are bad. The wild mushroom one tastes like it has raw mushrooms in it and the truffle one is bland. Because of this, I had literally zero hope for this Triple Cream Brie with Green Peppercorns. Luckily, I know how to admit when I’m wrong. Not all the Trader Joe’s flavored bries are bad. This was one of the best brie cheeses we tasted! It has whole peppercorns peppered (hehe) throughout the wedge, and they add so much texture and flavor. The flavor is intense and I love it!
