Best Dutch Crunch Bread You Can Get Shipped

It’s Uncle Sam(wich) week here at Sporked! All week long, we’re celebrating Independence Day by highlighting the best regional sandwiches and all the ingredients you need to make them at home. For more tasty sandwich fixins, see the full collection of rankings, product recommendations, and more.

As a Northern California native, I have strong feelings about Dutch crunch bread. While we never had it in the house (does anyone?), it was the only way to go if you were getting a deli sandwich. Who’s choosing wheat over Dutch crunch bread?! I have visceral memories of the crunch on top of the bread scraping the top of my mouth—and I remember loving it. The sweetness of the bread, the distinct texture of the crunchy craquelin-esque topping—a Dutch crunch roll can turn even the most basic sandwich into an exciting meal.

For the uninitiated, Dutch crunch bread is a style of white bread roll topped with a paste of rice flour, sugar, water, and yeast, which turns crackly and crunchy when it bakes. They’re a staple in Northern California and hard to find anywhere else.

I live in Los Angeles now and even here Dutch crunch rolls are few and far between. And when I lived on the East Coast, there was no hope at all. I would cry out, “Where can I buy Dutch crunch bread?!” And someone would yell back, “Go back to California, you West Coast elitist!” While I can’t help past me, I can help fellow NorCal expats craving a Dutch crunch sandwich. Because we tasted the two brands that ship Dutch crunch rolls (Max’s and Boudin Bakery), and now I can tell you the best dutch crunch bread to buy and have shipped, no matter where you are in the USA.

Max’s Dutch Crunch Bread

Yes, the owners of the coveted dutchcrunch.com domain do indeed make the best Dutch crunch rolls you can get shipped. They come ready to go—just pop them in the oven at 400 degrees until the top is crunchy and brown, let cool, then make yourself a dutch crunch sandwich any San Franciscan—even famous San Fran natives like actor Sam Rockwell and photographer Ansel Adams—would enjoy.

Each Dutch crunch roll is huge. You can make an incredible Dutch crunch sandwich the size of your forearm with one of these. The bread innards have a great white bread squish, and doughy sweetness. The crunch on top adds even more of that classic Dutch crunch sweetness (something Boudin was lacking), and it does get quite crunchy. That said, these still aren’t cut-your-mouth-up crunchy. But beggars can’t be choosers. And maybe it’s better that I don’t bleed every time I eat a sandwich. While a real San Franciscan, like comedian Margaret Cho, might have some notes, if you live far away from a local bakery that makes Dutch crunch bread, this is definitely the best available.
