What is white cake?
What, apart from the obvious color, what makes a cake a white cake? Well, traditionally a white cake is made without egg yolks, which tends to make it lighter and fluffier than other cakes. And while they could be any flavor, most white cake mixes go with the traditional vanilla, often giving a light, mild taste that goes with their light texture.
How we tested white cake mixes
We followed the directions on the box and baked each cake to perfection (or as close as we could get). We sampled a range of the biggest white mixes, from airy angel food cake mix to ultra moist white cake mix out there to find which one is the best white cake mix for your cake needs. Here are our picks for the best boxed white cake mix you can buy in a store or on Amazon.
- Pillsbury Moist Supreme White Cake Mix
-
This white cake mix lived up to its name, delivering a moist cake with a great, springy texture. If you’re not a fan of vanilla, this is the best white cake mix for you. It has the mildest vanilla flavor of the bunch, with just a faint tinge. Overall, it makes for a tasty cake…although, I don’t know if that qualifies it as “supreme.”

- Duncan Hines Perfectly Moist Classic White Cake Mix
-
Of all the white cake mixes we tested, this one has the strongest vanilla flavor, although I should add that it isn’t too overpowering or artificial. Texturally speaking, the cake is pretty moist and airy. This mix makes for a light, spongy cake that really grows in the pan. And if you’re looking for that punch of vanilla flavor, it’s the best white cake mix for you.

- Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist French Vanilla

As the label on the box proudly declares, “there’s pudding in the mix!” That’s probably why this white cake mix produces the richest cake of the bunch. That said, it could also be because it called for whole eggs, not just egg whites, in the recipe. It has a good vanilla taste, too. If you want decadent, this is the best boxed white cake mix to buy.

This white cake mix tops the list as the best white cake mix simply because it is the best combination of everything you want in a classic white cake: a soft, moist texture, mixed with a good vanilla flavor. Basically, it is just slightly better than all the others in every category. (And also, it is my favorite.)
