A New Cheez-It Crunch Flavor Just Dropped and We Tried It

Grooves. Snap’d. Gripz. What do all of these words have in common? They would make very ridiculous DJ names, yes, but also: They’re all Cheez-It snack lines. Cheez-It, I was unfamiliar with your game. I had no idea you were out here building out an entire extended universe of new Cheez-Its. It’s a little overwhelming, to be honest. 

Last year, Cheez-It Crunch joined the party. The puffy, window-paned squares hit 7-Eleven stores in two flavors—Zesty Jalapeno Cheddar and Kick’n Nacho Cheese—and now they’re rolling out to grocery stores in full-size bags, along with a new flavor, Cheez-It Crunch Sharp White Cheddar. We reviewed the first two flavors back in September and we weren’t super impressed. But hey, maybe third flavor’s a charm for these weird, crunchy snack objects.. Here’s my honest take on them.

Cheez-It Crunch Sharp White Cheddar

Pros: I’m a white cheddar apologist. I typically prefer white cheddar snacks over regular cheddar snacks, even though white cheddar is a marketing ploy that technically shouldn’t exist. Regardless, snack brands tend to make white cheddar taste a little tangier and sharper than “regular cheddar,” and that’s what you get here. The flavor is really pleasant and very reminiscent of the OG White Cheddar Cheez-Its. 

Cons: “I’m not sure why I’m eating a window,” said our editor-in-chief, Justine Sterling. I think that about sums it up. I am not vibing with the shape or texture of Cheez-It Crunch. These puffy squares look like the pretzels in Chex Mix if they were exposed to radiation. The shapes are totally uneven and too big for your mouth. They don’t have the smooth, satisfying crunch of a good Cheetos Puff. Honestly, they taste like weird croutons. I just can’t get behind them, I’m sorry.

Verdict: It’s a good thing flavor is king here at Sporked, because we’re still not sold on the crunchy “puffs” concept.
