Cheez-It has decided that crackers need a can.

The brand is putting three of its crackers into resealable canisters for the first time because a bag was no longer enough. Cheez-It Original, Cheez-It Grooves Minis Sharp White Cheddar, and Club Minis Original are all getting the new container, which is designed to keep the crackers crunchy between snacks.

The canisters are rolling out at select retailers nationwide this month.

And yes, they are probably exactly what you’re imagining: little cans of crackers.

Why Are My Crackers In A Can?

The new canisters are designed for snacking on the go, which makes sense if you’ve ever tried to put a half-eaten bag of crackers into a backpack and then discovered that you’ve created enough crumbs to feed a small army of ants.

The containers are resealable, so you can open them, eat some crackers, close them, and come back later without leaving the rest of the contents exposed to the elements. Or, more realistically, you can open one, eat half of it, tell yourself you’ll save the rest, and then finish it in the car.

At least the crackers will stay crunchy for those few minutes they survive.

There Are Three Options

The first is Cheez-It Original, which doesn’t need much of an introduction. It’s the classic square cracker made with 100% real cheese, now living in a little can.

Then there’s Cheez-It Grooves Minis Sharp White Cheddar, a new mini version of the ridged Grooves crackers. They’re smaller than the original Grooves and come in sharp white cheddar.

Club is joining in, too, with Club Minis Original. It’s the same light, flaky, buttery cracker, just in a smaller format.

So two of the three options are actually mini crackers, which feels appropriate for a product that is essentially a personal cracker canister.

This Could Actually Be Useful

I’m making fun of the can, but I can see the appeal.

A resealable container is a lot easier to throw into a bag than an open bag of crackers, and there’s something reassuring about knowing your snacks aren’t going to emerge from your backpack looking like they’ve been through a minor natural disaster.

It’s also a pretty good size for the kind of mindless snacking that starts with “I’ll just have a few” and ends with an empty container. Not that I’ve ever done that.

The new Cheez-It and Club canisters are rolling out at select retailers nationwide this month for a suggested retail price of $2.69.
