Ever wanted to live at a Costco? They’ve got recliners. They’ve got blankets, food, TVs, giant inflatable pools—what more could you want or need? A private bathroom, real bedroom, and working kitchen, you say? Costco’s got you. Because the first Costco apartments are set to be built this year. Before you start packing, here’s all the details you need to know.

What do you mean Costco apartments?

The mixed-use development will include both apartments and a larger-than-average Costco. We’re talking 185,000 square-feet of shopping pleasure combined with an 800-unit apartment complex. Of the 800 apartments, 184 will be designated for low-income households.

The complex, which will be built on top of the Costco itself, will include a rooftop pool, work spaces, courtyards, and a fitness center. Plus, you have to consider the actual Costco to be an amenity. I mean, who else will have a food court in their apartment complex?

Where are these apartments located?

This store/living space hybrid is being built in Los Angeles’s Baldwin Hills neighborhood.

Why is Costco building apartments?

There are a couple of reasons. The altruistic reason is that Costco is helping to alleviate the housing crisis with new, affordable housing. The cynical reason is that this is a way for Costco to open more locations in places where traditional land is unavailable for development.

When will the Costco apartments be finished?

Real estate developer Thrive Living just broke ground this month (January 2026), and, according to Fox 11 Los Angeles, it is supposed to take two and a half years to complete. No word yet on when the property will start taking lease applications—or whether the lease comes with a complimentary Costco membership. You should at least get a discount, right?

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
