There are few childhood betrayals quite like spotting a Royal Dansk cookie tin at your grandma’s house, opening it up, and finding buttons and sewing supplies inside. No cookies. Not even a crumb. Just several needles and a loose spool of blue thread.

Somehow, the blue tin became as famous for storing random household items as it did for the Danish butter cookies it was designed to hold. And now, in celebration of its 60th anniversary, Royal Dansk has found another use for it: Christmas tree decoration.

Royal Dansk has teamed up with Old World Christmas to turn its iconic cookie tin into a glass ornament. So now you can hang a tiny version of the tin on your tree and disappoint yourself all over again when you remember there are no cookies inside this one either.

The Royal Dansk Ornament Looks Just Like The Real Thing

The ornament recreates the round blue Royal Dansk tin, complete with the familiar logo and assortment of butter cookies pictured on the front. It’s mouth-blown from glass and hand-painted using techniques inspired by 19th-century ornament-making, so it’s a little more intricate than shrinking a cookie tin and sticking a hook on top.

The finished ornament costs $27.99 and is available now from Old World Christmas and Amazon for the 2026 holiday season.

The Cookie Tin Turns 60 This Year

The ornament arrives as Royal Dansk celebrates 60 years of its Danish butter cookies. The brand launched in 1966, and that famous blue tin has been around since the beginning.

And while it was designed to keep the cookies fresh, we all know that’s not the only job it ended up with. Once the cookies were gone, the tins were far too useful to throw away. Sewing supplies, buttons, coins, random screws you might need one day… you name it, someone has probably stored it in a Royal Dansk tin. For me, it was my Barbie’s accessories.

Royal Dansk knows it, too. The brand has embraced the tin’s second life as a household storage container, which makes turning it into an ornament feel strangely appropriate. We’ve already spent 60 years finding things to do with these tins. We may as well put one on the Christmas tree.

And it looks like this won’t be the last time Royal Dansk ventures into Christmas decor. The brands say the ornament is the beginning of a longer-term partnership between Royal Dansk and Old World Christmas, although they haven’t revealed what else they have planned yet.

For now, the Royal Dansk cookie tin ornament is available for $27.99 from Old World Christmas and Amazon.

It may be the only Royal Dansk tin you can confidently approach without wondering whether you’re about to find cookies or a sewing kit.
