As I learned recently, it’s advent calendar season. All kinds of companies are in my inbox asking me to write up their collection of tiny doors hiding 12 or 24 little treats. Of all those emails, today’s topic truly piqued my interest: a $270 24-day world tour of whiskey distilleries, all in one box.

Flaviar has been producing themed whiskey advent calendars for years now—and they reliably sell out early. At the time of this writing, there are only a few more days left to pre-order one for yourself. If you’re already convinced (and they’re still available), here’s the pre-order page; if you need a little more information, read on!

Pros: The presentation is off the charts. Ahead of day one, you open the “Amenity Kit” door containing a passport-themed tasting journal detailing all 24 samples (and instructions on how to “taste” whiskey properly, which I appreciated as a novice), a gift code for a year of Flaviar Black membership, and two engraved Glencairn glasses to use when tasting each whiskey.

Since Flaviar lists all 24 samples (and what major awards they’ve won) on their website as part of the product listing, I don’t feel too bad spoiling the lineup for myself by reading through the details in the tasting journal. Even as a novice, I recognize some of these brands are true heavy hitters in the whiskey space, and the global spread surely offers a great variety in styles and flavors. Y’all, even the box is fancy as hell—it’s covered in location-themed stickers and embossed with ridges to emulate a metal shipping crate that’s been sent around the world.

Cons: I know this is a cop out, but the box is so nice, I don’t want to tear open the doors. This advent calendar is too nice. It’s also $270.

Is the Flaviar whiskey advent calendar worth the money?

Would I, a whiskey novice on an ice cream reviewer’s salary, purchase this for myself? Probably not. But if you’re in a comfortable enough financial position to have “whiskey” as a hobby, I can’t think of a better pick. The quality of the contents is matched by the quality of the overall presentation—I can’t say that about every advent calendar I’ve been sent this year. The Flaviar Whiskey Advent Calendar would be an amazing gift for the whiskey enjoyer in your life—just make sure they didn’t already order it for themselves first.
