These New Protein Milkshakes Are Made For Retro Flavor Fans

For the most part, protein shake flavors are pretty boring. Sorry, it’s true! Yes, there are some fun (and very good) flavors out there, but by and large, protein shakes tend to come in chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and banana…and very little in between. It makes them knowable, predictable, easy to understand – but sometimes, you want something different, right?

Thankfully, Genius Gourmet has delivered with the launch of a new line of protein milkshakes, which is arriving to market with two flavors – and one of them indicates where the brand could be taking things next. Let’s break it down. 

Genius Gourmet Ultra-Filtered Protein Milkshakes

This week, protein snack company Genius Gourmet announced the debut of its new Ultra-Filtered Protein Milkshakes. For anyone who hasn’t heard of Genius Gourmet before, it might interest you to know that its CEO, Lance Rankin, is one of the original founders of Premier Protein. It’s safe to say, then, that Genius Gourmet will likely have a pretty good handle on ready-to-drink protein shakes – given that it’s led by one of the pioneers of them in the first place. 

In the line’s official press release, though, Rankin says that he believes “there is tremendous opportunity to innovate around taste, nutrition and the overall consumer experience” – and so we come to these new drinks. Genius Gourmet Ultra-Filtered Protein Milkshakes will deliver 30 grams of protein and 170 calories per portion, and are sweetened with cane sugar. Where they really stand out, though, is in one of the new flavors. These milkshakes are launching with a Root Beer Float option, alongside a Creamy Chocolate flavor. The latter kind of feels par for the course, and it’d be hard to launch a line of protein milkshakes without a chocolate choice – but root beer float? I love to see it! This one feels distinct in a pretty saturated market, and hopefully, Genius Gourmet will follow that instinct with other retro flavors. 

Where Can I Get These New Milkshakes?

Starting September 15, Genius Gourmet Ultra-Filtered Protein Milkshakes will be available at 1,400 Target locations across the country, as well as on Amazon and Genius Gourmet’s website. A 15-pack of the Root Beer Float flavor will also be available from Costco’s online store starting September 21. Premier Protein, meanwhile, has recently been turning its attention to protein soda. The never-ending parade of strange protein foods keeps on marching through food city, and we just bear witness.
