You don’t have to go international to experience an exciting new (to you) McDonald’s menu. But you’ll probably have to hop on a plane. Because not only do residents of Hawaii get to enjoy perfect waves, sandy beaches, fresh poke, and the right to give the hang loose sign without seeming weird, they also get a McDonald’s menu that features five state-exclusive items. Here’s what you’re missing.

Local Deluxe Breakfast Platter

There aren’t many knife and fork McDonald’s foods but it’s worth pulling over to eat this one. You get scrambled eggs, rice, SPAM, and sliced Portuguese sausage. Skip the ketchup and grab a few packets of soy sauce, which Hawaiian McDonald’s stock, and drizzle it over the eggs and rice.

McTeri Deluxe

This Hawaii-exclusive burger includes a teriyaki-glazed patty (hence the name), lettuce, and tomato.

Fried Apple Pie

You used to be able to get fried apple pie at mainland McDonald’s locations, but these days you can only find the crispy, molten-hot dessert in Hawaii.

Fried Taro Pie

This fried hand pie is stuffed with mildly sweet purple taro.

Haupia Pie

People are obsessed with this coconut pudding pie. The filling is sweet and gelatinous (in a very good way), which contrasts with the crispy, bubbly exterior. If you’re going to stop by a Hawaiian McDonald’s for just one item—make sure it’s this one. And be sure to check if the location you’re going to serves it. It’s not a guarantee!

About the Author

Justine Sterling

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
