Have you ever been on a plane and received not pretzels, not Biscoff cookies, but a little packet of crackly, honey-roasted peanuts? Have you ever thought to yourself, “Oh yeah, these here peanuts on this here plane might just be the best meal I’ve had in my life” because you forgot to eat breakfast that morning but now somehow it is 6 p.m. and that handful of nuts is the only thing sustaining you? I can’t say for certain if I have ever had honey-roasted peanuts outside the context of a plane, and that is insane because they are great. But I can say for certain that I might be having them again very soon, because there’s a new M&M’s flavor hitting shelves this month that I don’t think I will be able to resist buying, and yes, I’m talking about Honey Roasted Peanut M&M’s.
Will these new M&M’s essentially just be peanut M&M’s with a honey-roasted peanut instead of a regular one?
We haven’t tried these yet, but judging by images of the packaging, these new M&M’s look like normal Peanut M&M’s with the honey-roasted flavoring in the chocolate rather than on the nut. I say this for two reasons. For one, the peanut sticking out of the M&M on the packaging looks exactly the same as the peanut sticking out of the M&M on the regular Peanut M&M’s packaging. For two, the name of the flavor says Honey Roasted Peanut, and then says “Artificial Flavor” really small underneath. That said, Mars is a big company, named after a big planet. If anyone can find the recipe developers to nail a honey-roasted peanut flavor, it is them. Plus, from a production standpoint, this probably means they can use the same peanuts that are nestled within classic Peanut M&M’s and not have to change anything on the line except the chocolate itself. Even I, a honey-roasted-peanut purist (a thing I just decided I am), can see their reasoning there. So I am hoping that caramelly, honeyed, nutty flavor comes through and these things really knock it out of the chocolaty, peanutty park.
These new M&M’s have already been spotted at Walmart and are supposed to be in stores nationwide this month. Plus, they are not limited edition but are instead a permanent addition to the M&M’s flavor lineup, so no rush to snag them. I myself will be rushing to snag them for no reason other than I must know what these bad boys taste like. Call me nutty, but hey, inquiring M&M’s-loving minds gotta know.
