Kellogg’s ice cream slammed into the freezer aisle like it was something we’d all be asking for. Give us breakfast ice cream, they thought we were screaming. And, look, the idea is sound. As all older millennials have agreed, cereal is too sweet to be cereal nowadays. It’s dessert. So, why not just make it into ice cream? Why not go one step further than putting your Pop-Tart in the freezer and turn it into an ice cream sandwich

I was excited to try all of the Kellogg’s ice cream flavors, Pop-Tarts ice cream sandwiches, and Rice Krispie Treat ice cream sandwiches. Boy, was I let down.

Essentially, all of the Kellogg’s cereal ice cream sucks (with two exceptions, kinda). And the Rice Krispie ice cream sandwiches are bad, like, really bad. I try to stay positive in these rankings because I don’t want to yuck anyone’s yum and I think there’s enough negativity on the internet. However, Kellogg’s really could have done something special with these treats. And, instead, it feels like they didn’t even try. They slapped their fans across the face and said eat this, you rubes.

Try again, Kellogg’s. You owe us. Make the ice cream actually creamy. Make the mix-ins actually crunchy. Make the Rice Krispies Treats taste like they were made by someone who has at least heard of a Rice Krispies Treat.

Anyway, if you’re desperate to try some Kellogg’s ice cream, here’s the best of the bunch.

Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Ice Cream

Best Cereal Flavor

Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Ice Cream

The Frosted Flakes themselves are totally pulverized. This isn’t Frosted Flakes ice cream, this is the end of a bowl of Frosted Flakes ice cream. It does taste like Frosted Flakes cereal milk—creamy and lightly sweet. It’s pleasant enough and, out of all the Kellogg’s cereal ice cream we tried, it tastes the most like the cereal it’s trying to emulate.

Kellogg’s Pops Ice Cream

Best Ice Cream Quality

Kellogg’s Pops Ice Cream

This Kellogg’s ice cream does not really taste like Pops. The Pops mix-ins are far too soft. It does, however, taste like cornbread ice cream. And I’m into it. The ice cream itself is creamy and corny and sweet. And the “Pops” mix-ins are much more convincing as chunks of cornbread.

Chocolate Pop-Tarts Ice Cream Sandwiches Frosted Chocolate Fudge

Best of the Best

Chocolate Pop-Tarts Ice Cream Sandwiches Frosted Chocolate Fudge

There’s nothing wrong with a Pop-Tarts Ice Cream Sandwich. Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts Ice Cream Sandwiches are good. Full stop. The miniature chocolate Pop-Tarts taste almost like macarons. And the ice cream in the middle is deep, rich, and chocolaty. If you’re looking for an ice cream treat to buy that’s inspired by breakfast foods, this is the one to buy. It’s punching above its weight and a real triumph. Good job on this one, Kellogg’s.

Justine Sterling

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
