Historically, I’ve been a chocolate coffee creamer naysayer. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good mocha latte as much as the next guy, but you really need a robust chocolate syrup or straight-up cocoa powder for the flavor of chocolate to make an impression. In my experience, chocolate coffee creamer doesn’t have enough concentrated chocolate flavor to make coffee actually taste like chocolate. It’s just glorified chocolate milk.
But how about a coffee creamer that claims to make your coffee taste not like chocolate but specifically like a Kit Kat? Could that be a totally different scenario, one that could transform a chocolate coffee creamer skeptic into a chocolate coffee creamer guzzler? I tasted the new Kit Kat Coffee-Mate to find out.

Pros: On Nestle’s website, the brand claims that new Kit Kat Coffee-Mat channels an “indulgent blend of chocolatey wafer flavor with every sip.” I was dubious, but, dammit, they did it. Sipped on its own (yeah, when we’re taste testing coffee creamer, we typically raw dog at least one swig), this stuff is just sweet, sweet, sweet. In coffee, however, it really tastes like chocolatey wafers. More specifically, this tastes like a combo of wafer and the chocolatey cream you find between the wafers when you bite into a Kit Kat. It’s kind of wild!
Cons: If you were hoping for a deep, authentic chocolate flavor, you won’t find it here. Kit Kat Coffee-Mate tastes like sweet, cheap, ultra-creamy candy bar milk chocolate. I tried it in two different cups of coffee—one cup made with a Starbucks French Roast K Cup pod at the office, the other an Americano made with the medium-intensity espresso I drink at home—and it really worked in both. However, I could see the Kit Kat flavor getting lost in the mix if you use this creamer in a stronger, more assertive coffee. And, of course, if drinking coffee that tastes like a candy bar sounds bad to you, you’re probably going to hate this stuff. I actually like sweet coffee, but I wouldn’t be able to drink this every day.
