This year’s Live Más LIVE presentation clued us into plenty of upcoming Taco Bell releases. Between entrees, desserts, sauces, and skincare, we’ve got a good idea of all the Taco Bell items we’ll be shoving into our mouths over the next year. (Okay, we probably aren’t going to put the under-eye patches in our mouths.) One of the healthier options coming down the line is a new variant of the chain’s exclusive soda: Mountain Dew Baja Midnight Zero Sugar.

What does Mountain Dew Baja Midnight taste like?

Per Taco Bell themselves, Mountain Dew Baja Midnight “lends passion fruit flavor with the iconic tropical lime taste of MOUNTAIN DEW BAJA BLAST.” In less corporate phrasing, this is a passion fruit-lime soda. You can check out our own Tyler Bowersreview of the original full-sugar version for an expert’s thoughts. While Baja Midnight hasn’t quite captured the hearts and tongues of America like Baja Blast, it must be doing well if Taco Bell is doubling down with Baja Midnight Zero Sugar (and a frozen dessert à la last year’s Baja Blast Pie).

When is Mountain Dew Baja Midnight Zero Sugar coming to Taco Bell?

Unfortunately, we don’t have that information just yet. The other news we’re waiting on could be heartbreaking, depending on your favorite existing Taco Bell soft drink. If we’re getting a new addition to the fountain drink lineup at Taco Bell, that means an existing one will have to die to make room. (Discontinuation is, functionally, death for sodas.) If I had to guess, I think we’ll see Mountain Dew Baja Midnight Zero Sugar take the place of… G2: Gatorade Fruit Punch.

I know some of you are surprised to learn there’s any Gatorade on tap at Taco Bell, but it’s true! This half-the-sugar Gatorade is holding on for dear life, considering the bottled G2 drinks have been all but discontinued in favor of Gatorade Zero and the new Gatorade Lower Sugar line. If PepsiCo were interested in fully putting G2 to bed, this would be a great opportunity to eliminate one of the subline’s biggest placements.

That being said, while we’re pitching ideas, what if a Baja Blast-flavored Gatorade replaced that G2 Fruit Punch? PepsiCo owns both Mountain Dew and Gatorade; legally speaking, there’s nothing keeping us from enjoying a Baja Blast Thirst Quencher as soon as the flavor scientists can cook it up.
