It feels like just yesterday when I broke the news of a brand-new collaboration between Mountain Dew and Trolli hitting shelves in the fall of 2026. Well, despite what Ohio’s muggy weather has me believing, it is allegedly deep into autumn. As such, I’ve got two cans of the newest Mountain Dew in front of me to compare not only against each other, but against last year’s Trolli flavor and Mountain Dew’s whole roster of previous flavor innovations. I’ll try to keep it brief.

Thanks to Trolli for sending over a few cans of their second soda collaboration to taste-test… even if they showed up with more than a few dings and dents. I’m not sure I’m getting a factory-standard amount of carbonation here, but I’ll soldier forward bravely nonetheless.

New Mountain Dew Flavor!

Pros: I wasn’t the biggest fan of last year’s Trolli-inspired soda on account of one simple belief: Mountain Dew needs sugar to properly emulate a Trolli gummy worm. Now that I’ve tried a full-sugar take on the concept, I’m even more convinced (and equally worried about the zero-sugar version I’m sampling next). This delivers the fruity mishmash Trolli‘s dual-toned worms are famous for, with an impressive mouthfeel to boot. Somehow, this lightly tropical soda leaves the impression of having just chewed a few worms… in a good way.

If you’re the kind of person who isn’t immediately scared off by the idea of a gummy worm soda, this is everything you want and more. The diehard VooDEW fans in my comments should be happy with the accuracy of this sugary, candyriffic soda, even if they’re still busy putting up missing-person posters for Grim.

Cons: Even for a Mountain Dew, this is mighty sweet. I’m not complaining personally, but I do have a professional sweet tooth; your mileage may vary.

Mountain Dew Zero Sugar Trolli Mango Pineapple Punch

New Mountain Dew Flavor!

Pros: This is a very pleasant mango-pineapple-flavored zero-sugar soda

Cons: At the expense of not tasting like a gummy worm! That’s the whole point, oh man.

Y’all, I understand it’s a good and productive thing to make zero-sugar versions of popular sodas, but I don’t think every single limited-time-only flavor needs to commit to using double the shelf space just to deliver a subpar secondary version of a good idea. There’s no argument that this alternatively sweetened version is a healthier landing pad for folks trying to switch off full sugar while keeping a familiar flavor in their life; this flavor is brand-new!

Mountain Dew, you should steal an idea from the other guys. The Coca-Cola Creations line featured all kinds of flavors released in full sugar, zero sugar, or both, depending on what worked best for each flavor. Use a little more discretion before assuming every flavor that passes muster in full sugar will do the same sans the good stuff.
