Mountain Dew Is Bringing Back a Cult Fave Flave from the ’00s

There’s a typhoon approaching the nation. But don’t freak out—this typhoon is safely enclosed in cans, entirely metaphorical, and will most likely not cause actual flooding. It may, however, cause a tsunami of hype. Because after an entire decade, Mountain Dew is bringing back their Typhoon Dew flavor, and die-hard Mountain Dew fans are extremely stoked.

Apparently a buffet of flavors that include classic Mountain Dew, Flamin Hot, Legend (exclusively at Buffalo Wild Wings), Baja Blast, Purple Thunder, Spark, Code Red, Livewire, Major Melon, and Voltage was not enough to satisfy fans of Typhoon Dew. Because they’ve been calling for the return of the tropical punch-flavored soda every year since it went off the shelves a decade ago. Well, Mountain Dew heard their calls (finally), because Typhoon is back.

For context: The first time this flavor came out, it was known as Flavor #509 and was released as part of the “DEWmocracy” campaign in 2009 (a campaign where people in different cities could vote on which new Dew flavor they wanted released in stores). Typhoon ended up losing to the White Out flavor, but it still returned for a brief time in summer of 2011 as part of a “Back by Popular DEWmand” promotion. Flash forward to 2022. After rumors have been swirling around the internet for some time, Typhoon’s return has finally been confirmed.

So, how  do you actually get your hands on a bottle of this cult favorite? Easy. You just have to steal the declaration of independence. JK! All you have to do is become a member of Dew HQ, Mountain Dew’s free-to-join rewards program. Then on June 1, members of Dew HQ will be able to buy 16-ounce cans of Typhoon Dew from the Dew Store, which currently consists of mostly clothing (Dew Wear) and gear (Dew Gear). I hope this includes rain gear, because this beverage’s long-awaited arrival is about to make a big splash.

I didn’t have the opportunity to taste this exclusive beverage ten years ago, did you? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts! I’m trying to decide if it’s worth it to become a member of Dew HQ just so I can try Typhoon this time around. And maybe while I’m there I’ll snag some Dew Gear, mostly so I can say “don’t mind if I dew” quietly to myself every time I put something into my shopping cart. It’s the little things.

  • Where I’m from we only get one flavor of Mountain Dew, original. We got Baja Blast at some Taco Bells. I have never even heard of the other ones. Great article!
