The collab everyone’s been waiting for is finally here. Mountain Dew and Trolli have released not one, but TWO different products for us all to enjoy this VooDEW-less spooky season: Trolli x Mountain Dew Sour Brite Crawlers and Mountain Dew Zero Sugar x Trolli Cherry Lemon. Mountain Dew and Trolli very graciously sent over a can of the new Trolli-flavored Mountain Dew soda, which just hit Walmart shelves—be on the lookout for our review of the gummies soon—so let’s find out if it’s worth depriving us of a VooDEW.

This release is the first time since 2009’s Ultra Violet that a full sugar version of a new Mountain Dew flavor has NOT been offered. You read that right, folks, it’s zero sugar only! Let’s crack open a can and find out how this Dew does the worm.

Mountain Dew Zero Sugar x Trolli Cherry-Lemon

New Mountain Dew Flavor!

Mountain Dew Zero Sugar x Trolli Cherry-Lemon

Pros: This is genuinely the best Mountain Dew zero sugar I’ve ever tried. I know, I know, I just gave very high marks to Summer Freeze Zero Sugar—but I think this one tops it. While you do get some slight notes of the artificial sweeteners, I think it actually helps replicate the flavor of a gummy worm-type candy. And this new Dew does an incredible job of emulating the balanced fruitiness of the cherry-lemon Trolli worms. I don’t want to call it too early, but has Mountain Dew finally perfected the secret to zero sugar drinks?!  Also, shout out to the art team. The can (and box art) is adorable.

Cons: It’s nowhere near the sour level I was hoping for. I would say that 2022’s VooDEW (which was “sour candy flavor”) was much more sour than this. Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t say that I’d have much preferred this soda to be based on the grape-strawberry Trolli worms. While I enjoy this soda, I think a Grape-Strawberry Trolli Mountain Dew could take us into 10 spork territory.

Verdict: If you’re a zero sugar drinker who’s been waiting for a new Mountain Dew, then run, don’t walk to the store to grab this one. And if you’re a full sugar drinker who usually stays away from zero sugar, I’d encourage you to seek out a bottle and try it for yourself. You may be pleasantly surprised.
