My favorite kind of chip just became a new Doritos flavor. If you’re confused, let me break it down: Pepsico decided to do a “flavor swap” of their most iconic snacks. Ruffles got the Cool Ranch Doritos flavor, Cheetos got Lay’s Sweet Southern Heat BBQ, and Doritos… Doritos got Cheddar & Sour Cream Ruffles. The best of the bunch, if I do say so myself.

Guys, it’s been a long time since I spotted a new chip flavor in the snack aisle and picked it up like a kitten. Lots of “ooo-ing” and “ahh-ing” and unnecessary swaddling. The only downside to these new Doritos is that I’ve got very high expectations. They’ve basically published their own fanfic of sour cream and onion chips, and since I love the OG source material, I need them to get these just right. 

I baby-carried the bag all the way home and tried them for myself. Here’s my take.

Doritos Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream

Pros: Look, the flavor totally works. I’d love to see this at Taco Bell as a Doritos Locos Tacos option. You mainly get that zippy sour cream and cheddar tang right at the start. They’re bright and simple and yummy. 

Cons: If you shuffled these into a bowl and pretended they were regular Doritos, my tastebuds could be tricked. They don’t have the same immediate sharpness as Ruffles. The cheddar flavor is very similar to Nacho Cheese Doritos, and the sour cream isn’t prominent enough to differentiate them. Plus, like all Doritos, the corn chip takes over as you chew, which makes the flavors stand out even less. 

Verdict: I would definitely buy these, but I think they could taste stronger of cheddar and sour cream—which might just be a flavor combo that works best with potatoes, as much as it pains me to say.
