A hill I will die on: Onion flavored snacks are the best snacks and there aren’t nearly enough of them. Is that two hills to die on? Either way, it’s stunning to me that more snack brands haven’t embraced the savory, tangy flavor. (And I’m not talking about sour cream and onion—I’m talking in-your-face Funyun onion, sweet Maui onion, or Onion & Garlic like Wise makes.) Where are my onion Goldfish? How about some onion Tostitos—wouldn’t that be wild? Fervent fans of oniony snacks have to take our Ws where we can find them and here’s a biggie: Cheez-It French Onion Dip flavored crackers are hitting stores now—but there are a couple of caveats…

Okay, I found my keys and I’m hopping in the car—where can I get these new Cheez-Its?

Before you bother scraping ice off that windshield, make sure you have a Kroger-owned grocery store in your area. That’s the only grocery chain where you’ll find the new French Onion Dip Cheez-Its. I know that sounds limiting, but (for better or worse) Kroger owns a lot of grocery stores, including Baker’s, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, and King Soopers. There’s a whole list here

Caveat deux: French Onion Dip is a limited edition Cheez-It flavor, which means there’s no telling how long they’ll be on shelves. If you see these suckers, grab them asap.

What are these new Cheez-Its going to taste like?

As my colleague Jordan Myrick once explained, the thing that sets French onion dip apart from regular ol’ onion dip is caramelized onion flavor. Implicitly, this new Cheez-It flavor should channel the sweetness and savory richness of onions that were cooked down in a dutch oven. And these are Cheez-Its we’re talking about, so they should have some baked-in cheesy flavor, too. Cheese plus caramelized onion is giving French onion soup rather than French onion dip—and I’m perfectly okay with that.

Haven’t I been hearing A LOT about A LOT of different Cheez-It flavors lately?

You sure have. Cheez-It has been on a snack-release spree, baby. We’ve recently tasted and reviewed a new Cheez-It Crunch flavor (Sharp White Cheddar), a new flavors of Cheez-It Grooves (Loaded Nacho), a new flavor of Cheez-It Snap’d (Honey BBQ), plus Gluten Free Cheez-It and a new Cheez-It snack mix. Cheez-It gives and gives and they’re finally giving onion-lovers what we crave. Hey, maybe I won’t have to die on a hill after all!

About the Author

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
