Our Honest Review of Pop Secret’s New Bagged Popcorn Flavors

What’s your secret, Pop Secret? Is it that you have a line of bagged popcorn flavors coming out for the first time in over ten years? That’s a juicy one. Let’s talk about it. 

Pop Secret just released three new popcorn flavors… in bags. Which is kinda huge for them. The flavors are Double Cheddar, Movie Theater Butter, and Homestyle Sea Salt—and yes, I know I said this is the first time Pop Secret has released a new bagged popcorn in a decade, but that’s a fact I got off Wikipedia, with no real source to back it up. So who knows? This might be the first time they’ve put out a bagged popcorn flavor, ever. Which is even more exciting. 

For the record, Pop Secret’s Movie Theater Butter microwave popcorn is our #1 best microwave popcorn. So I did go into this review with a fair bit of optimism. Silly me. I know better than that.

Pop Secret Double Cheddar: Review

Pros: You know, I actually find the flavor of this new popcorn to be pretty yummy. The cheesiness has a yeasty nooch thing going for it. Also, the popcorn quality is superb. For a bagged popcorn, the kernels taste really crisp and fresh. So that’s cool. But you know what’s not cool?

Cons: You can’t name a popcorn “Double Cheddar” and give me a handful of these. This popcorn is barely cheesy. Like, some of the popcorn pieces are half-nude. Put your damn clothes on! Disgraceful. 

Verdict: *caveman voice* Flavor good. Popcorn crunchy. NOT. ENOUGH. CHEESE.

Pop Secret Movie Theater Butter: Review

Pros: I’m just gonna copy and paste my previous remarks from Double Cheddar, because I’m noticing a pattern. The flavor, which is light and buttery and also has a nice sort of depth to it that I can’t exactly place, is perfectly pleasant. And the popcorn is quite fresh for something that’s been sitting in a bag for weeks. 

Cons: Am I the problem? Is it me? Do I dispense way too much butter in my popcorn bucket at the movie theater? Are my taste buds that messed up? I’m just not getting that specific greasy, extra salty, almost ghee-like butter flavor that I’ve grown to know and love from a movie theater popcorn machine. This just isn’t hitting for me, I’m sorry. 

Verdict: *pounds chest* Need! More! Butter!

New Pop Secret!

Pop Secret Homestyle Sea Salt

Pros: Never in my wildest fantasies would I expect “Homestyle Sea Salt” to win out against Movie Theater Butter and Double Cheddar. But this is a near perfect version of salty, buttery bagged popcorn. Yes, buttery. I can’t say it has more butter than the other flavors, but you can almost taste it more clearly, thanks to the salt. It’s balanced and light but still super satisfying. The whole team agreed that this flavor alone deserves a spot on our bagged popcorn ranking.  

Cons: I don’t have any complaints! I just wish the other flavors were better. 

Verdict: No more caveman speak, this is serious. When you see these at your grocery store, buy this over the other two and call it a day.
