No matter how much I may dislike a product, I don’t love writing super-negative reviews. I truly believe most food and beverage companies are trying to make good products that most people will enjoy (except for Perfy’s pizza soda—they know what they did), and I don’t believe any single opinion should be held up as fact. While I’ll always be honest in my reviews, I try to balance my opinions with those of other taste testers whenever possible. In summation, it brought me no joy to rank dog food ahead of the Pumpkin Spice RXBAR I tried last year.
After that review went live, RXBAR reached out (extremely apologetically) to ask whether any of their other products might serve me better. In the interest of fair coverage, I’ve tried a variety of the brand’s offerings since then. After last year’s Pumpkin Spice bar took the fun out of functional, today’s subject is a phoenix rising from the ashes. Light spoilers for the rest of this piece: RXBAR’s Protein Energy Bites are fantastic. I’m going to scarf these down for breakfast on a busy travel day; come along for the ride.

- RXBAR Protein Energy Bites: Strawberry Peanut Butter
-
Pros: Both flavors of Protein Energy Bites contain nothing but the good stuff: peanut butter, egg whites (staying out of the flavor spotlight this time), dates, and apple slices. The Strawberry flavor features strawberries, of course, along with honey and cranberry seeds for added flavor.
The end result is gluten-free, fruity orbs that taste real without tasting like dirt. If you’re not a “protein snack” person, these might make you a believer. These are far and away my favorite product from RXBAR; I hope the brand expands the Protein Energy Bites line with new flavors ASAP.
Cons: If the word “bites” had you thinking these Protein Energy Bites were Peanut M&M’s-sized, I’ve got some bad news. You get just two large bites per pack; each one contains an entire apple slice, among other things. I took multiple bites per “bite” to be comfortable–and I was still chewing for full minutes.

- RXBAR Protein Energy Bites: Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter
-
Pros: While the Strawberry bites are bright and fruity, a la fruit jerky, these Dark Chocolate bits are closer to a candy bar in flavor composition. This tastes too fun to be good for me. While RXBAR Protein Energy Bites aren’t the most efficient source of protein, the energizing ingredients and fiber make up for it in my eyes.
Cons: Both flavors are coated with shredded coconut, presumably to keep them from sticking to each other or the packaging. While that coconut isn’t contributing anything to the flavor, it’s surely a bummer to those unlucky allergy sufferers.
