I’m walking a tightrope today, folks. For a few months now, I’ve known about a particular new soda coming later this year covered in metaphorical caution tape. I’d normally be more than happy to spill the beans early, but there’s history here. Last year, I covered the Beetlejuice-branded Haunted Apple Fanta a little early and caught myself a copyright claim from Warner Bros. in return.
I’m not trying to go through that ever again, so today’s news is intentionally vague. In a few months, a new flavor of Fanta will feature a movie character in the soda’s name and on the can design. That said, I’m pretty confident we can discuss the flavor. Get ready for Sour* Fruit Punch Fanta.
What’s with the asterisk in Sour* Fruit Punch Fanta?
Nothing is simple in the world of soda. Technically speaking, this new Fanta may only be fruit punch flavored. But the ICEE variant of this soda (the only aspect of this entire release to be revealed to the public so far) includes the word “Sour” in the name. It’d be strange—though not impossible—for the ICEE to be specifically sour in contrast to the soda with which it shares a name/promotion. (Speaking of that ICEE variant, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was exclusive to a movie theater chain. That’s total conjecture though; ICEE distribution is so strange.)
Where did this information about a new Fanta flavor come from?
One of my regular sources inside the Coca-Cola ecosystem shared this news with me directly a few months ago. The Sour Fruit Punch Fanta ICEE was shown publicly at the National Restaurant Show just a few weeks ago. And to top it all off, product renders of this new soda hit the web recently to boot. This is as confirmed as soda gets, y’all.
When will this new Fanta flavor hit shelves?
According to the calendars I’ve seen, this will launch in mid-August and stay on shelves through the Halloween season. Alongside this release, we should also see multiple other Fanta flavors get redesigned labels fitting the theme—much like we saw with last year’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice collaboration. Feel free to speculate on what that theme is in the comments; I’ll have no part of it for my own safety.
