Sure, there are a lot of exciting new Mountain Dew releases coming this year (such as Mountain Dew Cabo Citrus), but what about the Mountain Dews of yesteryear? The releases that didn’t stick? I’ve decided to crack open my Discontinued Dew Vault and try a Mountain Dew that has not seen the light of day in a few years: Mountain Dew Cake Smash. What does it taste like and should it have stuck around? Read on to find out.

What is Mountain Dew Cake Smash?

As you probably guessed, Mountain Dew Cake Smash was a cake flavored Mountain Dew. While Cake Smash never officially launched in stores, there were three different opportunities that fans could get their hands on 16oz cans of it back in 2021: a giveaway where fans would tweet 2020 party fails to the brand and two very limited online drops.

Since then, Mountain Dew Cake Smash has not seen the light of day. But is Mountain Dew sleeping on a huge opportunity to bring back an incredible flavor or should it stay in the past? Let’s find out!

Discontinued Mountain Dew Flavor!

Mountain Dew Cake Smash (2021)

Pros: I’ve always got to call out beautiful designs in my reviews and I honestly think Cake Smash has one of my favorite Mountain Dew label designs. There is so much going on without it being too much. On the nose, Cake Smash has a very pleasant birthday cake frosting-like scent to it. And I am very happy to report that Cake Smash is not sickeningly sweet like you’d probably expect. It has a very nice vanilla—almost cream soda-y—flavor to it, followed by the citrus flavor of Mountain Dew. While it doesn’t taste like someone shoved a piece of birthday cake into my can of soda, I definitely get the essence and vibes of birthday cake. Plus, it’s still very carbonated after all these years.

Cons: While it’s not saccharine, this is very much a “dessert Mountain Dew.” I can’t really imagine this pairing well with much—certainly not with a meal. And while Cake Smash does taste good, a 16oz can is big. I drank about half of the can while typing this review and I don’t know that I want the other half. If Cake Smash was sold in 12oz cans—or even more ideally, 7.5oz mini cans—I would be much more sold on the idea of this flavor making a comeback. But it’s not a Mountain Dew I’d like to drink every day. Also, if I’m being honest, I am a little disappointed that it doesn’t taste like someone shoved a piece of birthday cake into my can of soda.

VERDICT: Bring it back!!

I’ve seen a decent amount of fans (and a very committed Twitter account) begging for Cake Smash to get another shot. And although I have been admittedly hard on Mountain Dew Cake Smash in the past, I think it is time that it sees the light of day once again.
