Starbucks has been on quite a role with their new releases recently. From their all-new Pumpkin Cream Shaken Espresso to the debut of their brand new banana bread flavored lattes and chais for the fall menu, we can’t say that we were necessarily expecting for Starbucks to release anything else new to their menu anytime soon.

Just as we thought that the next drink we had to look forward to trying out was the much anticipated debut of the Black Cat Frappuccino for Halloween, Starbucks dropped their newest menu addition as a delightful surprise for National Coffee Day on September 29. Yet again, we underestimated Starbucks’ ambition.

Since bringing nitro cold brew into the mainstream and making it widely available, we will admit we’ve been waiting to see more along those lines of aerated beverages from Starbucks. But now that wait is over as they are introducing their all new Aerocano to menus nationwide. But if you’re just as confused as to what that name might indicate, join the club. Let’s break it down together, shall we?

What Even Is An Aerocano?

An Aerocano is essentially just a take on an iced Americano, but it’s made in quite a unique way. Instead of water and espresso being mixed over ice to make an iced Americano, they take that same amount of espresso, add ice to it, and steam that together until all the ice is melted, and the mix has a luscious velvety texture to it. Poured over ice, it not only creates something that’s distinctly coffee forward with a smooth texture, but it creates a beautiful cascading effect that encourages you to appreciate its beauty before sipping.

Where Did This Come From?

Starbucks released this new drink in honor of National Coffee Day on September 29, but it seems like it’ll be here for quite some time. It actually has been a very popular drink for South Korea in particular where Starbucks initially developed this product for its stores.

It quickly became one of the most popular drinks at Starbucks in South Korea, and with the rise of iced Americano popularity in the United States, Starbucks believed it was going to be translatable to the local market here in the States. Starbucks just had to figure out how to scale the beverage while maintaining its artistry and execution. And now we get to taste it ourselves. Stay tuned for our official Sporked review.
