Did you know Taco Bell had breakfast? I didn’t. I didn’t know the wonders of Taco Bell breakfast burritos or the fact that a Taco Bell breakfast Crunchwrap even exists until I sat down to the entire Taco Bell breakfast menu. But now that I have eaten all the items on said menu, I have very strong opinions about them.

I, along with my colleagues Gwynedd and Jordan, tasted all of the Taco Bell breakfast burritos, quesadilla, Crunchwraps, and even the one sweet treat on the breakfast menu. And, I gotta say, I was pretty impressed. You can get a tasty, super-filling breakfast for cheap from Taco Bell. But there are definitely some items that are better than others (*cough* don’t get the steak *cough*).
Here’s the entire Taco Bell breakfast menu, ranked from skip to pull over immediately and get in line for the drive-thru.

I’ve enjoyed Taco Bell steak items before, but this Taco Bell breakfast quesadilla ain’t one of them. The steak tastes like microwave steak (I should know, I’ve had a lot of microwave steak). It’s chewy and, though it’s pretty bland, it somehow takes over the whole quesadilla. More cheese, less steak, please and thank you.

I know people really go to bat for the spicy potato soft taco, and I think it’s a totally fine and good vegetarian Taco Bell item. Unfortunately, the potatoes in this burrito are a letdown. They’re mealy. The burrito is made simply with the seasoned potatoes, scrambled eggs, and tomatoes—lots of tomatoes. Hot tomato chunks. I think you could save this burrito if you added some beans and more cheese (it really needs a lot more cheese). But on its own, it’s just a bit meh.

Steak strikes again. The burrito is stuffed with that chewy, not great steak, potatoes, eggs, tomatoes (so many tomatoes), and cheese (a blend of mozzarella, pepperjack, and cheddar). Again, the steak just isn’t pleasant.

There’s a lot going on here. You’ll see the sausage show up further down this list—because it is pretty good—but here that sweet-savory flavor is just too much when mixed with the seasoned potatoes and the warm tomatoes.

A Taco Bell breakfast Crunchwrap is a bit of a dream come true for me. I love Crunchwrapss and I love Mexican breakfast. Put ‘em together—how can you go wrong? I’ll tell you how: with hot guacamole. The California Crunchwrap is stuffed with a hash brown patty (love that), scrambled eggs, bacon, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, and guacamole. Our Breakfast California Crunchwrap had a big dollop of hot guac right in the middle so it squidged out immediately. And maybe I should have let it all gloop out, because heating the guacamole accentuates this sour flavor that kinda ruined the whole thing. Don’t worry. If you’re in the market for a Taco Bell breakfast Crunchwrap, there’s a much better option.

If you want a doughnut for breakfast, go to Krispy Kreme. Go to Dunkin’. Go to the supermarket. Skip Taco Bell’s version of doughnut balls. They’re so, so, so, sweet. Like, they hurt your teeth. And they’re ridiculously oily.

I really appreciate the bacon distribution in this breakfast burrito. And I love that it’s all chopped up so you get bits of bacon in every bite. It’s salty as heck, but you could balance that out by adding some sour cream or salsa (the Taco Bell Breakfast Salsa you get in the little yellow packets is good).

This is one hearty breakfast burrito—but sometimes that’s what you want! One of these costs less than $5 and will keep you full until at least late afternoon. The potatoes help balance out the salty meatiness of the bacon, though it could use more cheese.

The sausage version is the best of all the Taco Bell breakfast burritos. The sausage patty (yes, they use a patty rather than little balls of sausage meat) is a little sweet—like a traditional maple-infused breakfast sausage. And it mixes really well with the cheese (there was plenty of cheese in this one for whatever reason). It’s a great breakfast burrito with lots of classic breakfast flavors.

- Bacon Breakfast Quesadilla

The world needs more breakfast quesadillas. While we didn’t like the steak version, Taco Bell’s Breakfast Quesadilla with bacon is delightful. Once again, you get lots of salty bacon bits. The egg is fluffy and plentiful. It needs more cheese to truly qualify as a quesadilla, but it’s still really satisfying.

- Sausage Breakfast Crunchwrap
-
If you’re dining at Taco Bell in the a.m., then Breakfast Crunchwraps are the way to go. Both the sausage and the bacon versions are well worth the less-than-$5. The sausage Crunchwrap is particularly satisfying because of the layering. You get a hash brown patty topped with a sausage patty along with eggs, shredded cheese, and a creamy jalapeno sauce. That patty on patty action means you get a perfect bite pretty much every time.

Breakfast Crunchwraps are so fun. They’re so unique to Taco Bell. And the bacon Crunchwrap is so, so good. The standout is the mix of the bacon with the egg and the hashbrown and that creamy, spicy sauce. We could have used more of that sauce—but that’s what the Taco Bell app is for, you can customize the hell out of this. It’s the best thing on the Taco Bell breakfast menu and I implore you to try it.
