When it comes to bragging rights in the food world, few chains stand out more than In-N-Out, the incredibly popular West Coast chain that so many people seem to deem the pinnacle of fast food. Unfortunately, here on the East Coast, we have yet to see an In-N-Out, even though there have been locations creeping farther inland over the years (fingers crossed the East sees its first soon). After speaking with loyal customers or perusing the menu yourself, it’s not difficult to see why the chain gets such high praise. The ingredients are fresh, which is such a welcome change from other fast food chains that use frozen products, and the prices don’t make a huge dent in your wallet. This is a one-two punch of success that will likely keep the chain going strong for years to come.

But, with all that said, not every single customer who stops off at In-N-Out during their busy day sings praises. As with anything in life, there are pros and cons. As much as people talk about the chain like it’s God’s gift to this green Earth, there are definitely those who have had less than stellar experiences. So, if you find yourself cruising down a West Coast highway in search of an In-N-Out, keep these complaints in mind. You wouldn’t want your first experience at In-N-Out to be anything less than spectacular.

It’s Unwise To Order Fries

A batch of fries is essential to so many people who love a good fast-food burger. They’re the perfectly munchable accompaniment that just makes a meal feel complete. However, many customers agree that In-N-Out does not pull its weight when it comes to the fries (gasp!). Believe it or not, even Hilary Duff said, “They’re a bit sad. They’re a bit cardboard-y,” when asked about the chain’s fries (and this is someone who adores In-N-Out). Apparently, In-N-Out doesn’t partake in the twice-cooked process that gives other chains’ fries that crispy exterior.

Prepare For A Long Wait (Maybe)

One thing that’s always annoying about going to a spot that’s super popular is the inevitable lines. You might think you’re a genius for visiting an In-N-Out during off-peak hours, but everyone else is also thinking the same thing. Suddenly, you show up and quickly realize you’re in for a long wait time to get food. So, if your appetite is raging, keep this in mind because it might just be better to go somewhere without a massive crowd.

Drive-Thru Woes

Staying inside the comfort of your car and heading to the drive-thru should make a fast food experience more seamless, but it seems a lot of In-N-Out customers don’t feel this way. Even if the parking lot is jam-packed with cars, many customers have had such poor experiences with long drive-thru waits they’re more than happy to schlep inside to order.

Where’s The Mayo?

Everyone likes their burgers dressed a little differently and mayonnaise is a massively popular condiment people love smearing on their patties. However, at In-N-Out, you won’t find this condiment anywhere in sight. The only three sauces offered are ketchup, mustard, and a house spread (which is apparently a mustard-ketchup-mayo mixture). So, if you’re a dedicated mayo enthusiast, you’ll have to snag some to-go packets and bring them with you.

Order Mix-Ups Can (And Do) Occur

Because In-N-Out is so popular, every day thousands of orders pour into the kitchen, and even if the staff working is on their A game, it can get overwhelming quickly. This, of course, leads to wrong orders being assembled and handed out. As a customer, this can feel annoying, but it’s in everyone’s best interest to understand the staff is human, and everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Simply point out the mistake to an employee before flying off the handle and ruining the experience for everyone around you.
