Sure as the blue of the sky and the green of the grass, Aldi will have some funky products. I mean, the amount of times I’ve walked in for eggs and bread and left with cookies and organizers is immeasurable. And, sure, you can toss some of that up to a lack of impulse control. But it’s a common theme with Aldi shoppers that, to some extent, you’ve accepted that you’re just going to leave with a couple of random products that you probably didn’t even know Aldi sold until you spotted it in the corner of your eye. Our natural curiosity just gets the best of us―what can we say?

Well, I’ve seen my fair share of random products at Aldi at this point and most things don’t really surprise me anymore. But when they released the Aldi Crystal Clear Frozen Ice Cubes, things changed. And based on their instant internet fame, I’m not alone.

Aldi Is Selling Literal Ice Cubes

The product, in theory, provides a solution to a problem that a certain demographic of people do genuinely face. The demographic is at-home bartenders and the problem is a desire for a large ice cube that melts slowly, is crystal clear so it doesn’t obstruct from the visual appeal of the drink, and is free of air bubbles in the ice that could impact high-quality liquor when melting. Again, in theory, these provide that solution. But has it actually been executed well and are these really worth it? Well, both of those arguments are heavily contested on the internet.

The large ice cubes come in a 4-pack tin, and, as it says on the package, they are supposed to be crystal clear like you would find in a luxury cocktail at a world-class bar. And Redditors have even said that they expected them to be clearer, with one comment saying to, “Return them under the twice as nice guarantee!”

Ice Inflation?

But the real kicker here is the price. They’re a whopping $4.99. Which, sure, isn’t the worst price for an Aldi item. But considering that this means each ice cube in the 4-pack is being sold at roughly $1.25 per cube, it makes it seem abundantly ridiculous―especially if they aren’t as clear as they’ve been marketed to be. Unless you’re someone who generally makes their own cocktail ice and is intending on hosting last-minute with the same standards of drinks, then these are are a pretty obvious skip. Five dollars for the ice for four drinks, let alone the cost of the liquor, is just something we can’t get behind.
