There’s a lot to be said about the transition of a fan-favorite snack or candy being inevitably turned into a novelty item or two. But with a certain degree of popularity, it’s bound to happen. The Sour Patch Kids candy brand has apparently reached that degree of fame and one of their novelty candies is making waves in the digital space. The Sour Patch Kids Marshmallows were released back in 2019 and have been available off-and-on in seasonal holiday packs and in Five Below stores.

They’re really just standard marshmallows, shaped like the classic Sour Patch Kids candies. With these, they’re about three to four times the size, though. The marshmallows are coated in assorted colors and flavors of sour patch coating that, again, follow suit with the classic candies. Sometimes, fans are even able to find the marshmallows in the Sour Patch Watermelon flavor, following the same pattern.

Sour Patch Kids Meets Peeps

Sour Patch Kids Marshmallows are a comically large, neon, Pillsbury dough boy-esque version of the original Sour Patch Kids and the package coins them “great for decorating.” But, if you didn’t know anything about Sour Patch Kids, you wouldn’t assume they’re edible based on looks alone. These marshmallows are the stuff of nightmares. And Reddit agrees.

The Reddit thread that followed the original post took diabolical to the next level, though, as the OP went through the thread and responded to most of the suggestions for what to do with the “diabolical” candy with photographic proof that it was attempted. The suggestions ranged from freezing the marshmallows to hanging them from the rearview window of a car as an air freshener.

Most interestingly, it was never settled as to whether or not the marshmallows were actually any good from the OP. Commenters in the thread said that they were similar to Peeps in texture and form. User u/dotsdavid said, “They are okay, like sour [P]eeps.” They even blow up in the microwave like a Peep (and all marshmallows), as the OP went on to display.

Why Are They So Diabolical?

Of the thread, our personal favorite suggestions were the attempt to roast the candy like a standard marshmallow (which turned into the candy being engulfed in the flames from a gas stovetop and burning the candy coating) and using it for decorating, as the package suggested. This suggestion ended with a photo response of a single orange Sour Patch Kid Marshmallow being thumb-tacked to a blank white wall… diabolical indeed.

More than anything, I believe the Reddit thread that coined these marshmallows diabolical referred to the marketing surrounding the candy and the slightly disturbing look of the treat. No matter the recommendation or how you eat these marshmallows, they look scary.

Overall, I’d say these novelty Sour Patch candies are an easy skip for me. If I had kids to entertain or a more child-like palate myself, I could certainly see the appeal. But, regardless of the thread that followed, I think the OP was right… these are diabolical and so blatantly unnecessarily added to the Sour Patch lineup when the original gummies are such a staple to begin with.
