As far as ingenuity in gummy candies go, there’s not really that much to be said. I mean, aside from a creative flavor or shape here and there, there’s not really much that you can do to change it up. A gummy candy after all must be a gummy in order to still be classified as such. Generally, it’s a gelatin-based sweet poured into an extra cute mold with some kind of fun flavor. Or, in the case of Sour Patch Kids, some kind of vegetarian setting agent is used to achieve a similar effect.

Here’s the thing though, after years and years (105, to be exact) of Haribo playing into this gummy charade, the company is switching things up. And they’ve found a way to introduce some ingenuity into the same bite-sized form factor. They’re multi-textured and multi-flavored… they are Haribo Balla Bites.
Not Just Another Gummy
From the description that Haribo provided, these sound distinctly different of the typical gummy candies they release. Texture-wise they deliver two different sensations. The outside of the little hockey puck-shaped candies will be chewy and pop when bitten through. Inside this gummy casing will be a soft center with dual flavors. The brand says that each bite should deliver you a “Pop. Chew. Wow!” factor. Whether that will actually be executed will is still to be determined. But it’s nice to see Haribo introducing some different candy formats to their portfolio.
Each bite included in the packages come in one of four flavor sets. You may pull an orange, blackberry, and lemon sweet; a lemon, orange, and forest fruits sweet; a strawberry, orange, and forest fruits sweet; or an apple, lemon, and blackberry sweet. You can also choose between getting the flavors as a classic sweet or as the sour version.
What To Expect
This candy does sound suspiciously like if you were to cut up Sweet Tart Ropes into little bite-sized coins―especially regarding the sour option and the textures. I think where it differs and really introduces some greater intrigue is with the flavors. Not only is there two different flavors in the filling of each bite, but they cover a much greater span of recognizable fruit flavors than Sweet Tart Ropes.
Now, we’re just weeks away from seeing this new treat hit shelves. We expect these candies to be officially released in September. And when they do, you can, of course, expect us here at Sporked to let you know if Haribo’s innovation has paid off.
