Trader Joe’s Chocolate Coffee Granola Is a Bold Breakfast

Chocolate is the greatest thing to ever happen to coffee. Coffee on its own? Strong, bitter, serious in nature. Coffee with chocolate? Sweet, amusing, pleasurable. Basically, chocolate milk for grown-ups. It’s been enough to turn even the staunchest of coffee hater (me) into a borderline fan (i.e. not afraid to get it when I’m trying to avoid a nap). So I came into this review with high hopes!

I have to say, when they created this new Chocolate Coffee Granola, Trader Joe’s really nailed the experience of drinking a mocha, right down to the sheer boldness of the experience. The moment you open the bag, you’re hit with an overwhelming smell of caffeinated chocolate. Flavor-wise, it reminds me of a Quaker S’mores granola bar with a coffee flavor on the finish that lingers—but is it good?

Trader Joe’s Chocolate Coffee Flavored Granola

Pros: This granola is very sweet, but the sugary nature cuts any coffee bitterness, and I think that’s a good thing. Have you ever had one of those super-sweet mocha drinks from McDonald’s? Those are the vibes. Pair this granola with plain yogurt or an unsweetened milk and it should all balance out nicely—the added moisture won’t hurt, either.

Cons: Speaking of moisture, this stuff is pretty darn dry. If you’re a person who prefers to eat granola on its own, make sure you have a tall glass of water nearby. I guess it does limit your consumption so you’re not left buzzing off the residual caffeine until 4am if you were to down the whole bag in one go.
