Temptation: There’s a lot of it around this time of year. If you’re of the opinion that fall-themed and Halloween-themed food is to be embraced instead of reviled, then you quickly find yourself spoilt for choice in the first few weeks of September. The problem is that not all fall foods are created equal. Some of them are delicious seasonal treats that leave a mark; others are gimmicky and, whisper it, a bit annoying.

That’s not the case with one of Trader Joe’s recent fall drops, though. This one’s so good that people are actively having to avoid putting it in their baskets, for fear of lapsing into a food coma or spending all their money. Let’s discuss.

Trader Joe’s Chocolate Mousse Pumpkins

The offending (I use that term loosely) items in question are Trader Joe’s Chocolate Mousse Pumpkins. By now, these mini cakes are a seasonal staple at TJ’s, and every time they appear, people fall in love with them all over again. Each cake has layers of chocolate cake and mousse, enrobed in an orange frosting, delivered in a little pumpkin shape. They’re as cute as they are tasty.

And they are very tasty. Whenever these cakes drop, social media responds in force, with yearly Reddit threads appearing in praise of them. This year’s been no exception. “These are banned from my house from being too delicious and I have no self control with these,” said one person on Reddit, who’s clearly reached the end of their tether with the enticing qualities of the store’s Chocolate Mousse Pumpkins. “Oh man, I can’t buy these anymore because they are SO DELICIOUS. I will devour the entire thing!” stated another shopper. What are they putting in these things?

Tricks Of The Trade

As is custom, people have also shared their favorite methods of eating Trader Joe’s Chocolate Mousse Pumpkins (which are clearly very good on their own, so no hacks necessary). “I bought some a week ago and the sales clerk told me to put them in the freezer. It makes the icing nice and cold/ chewy and taste delicious,” advised someone in this year’s Reddit thread discussing the cakes. I also think these would be fun with some nonpareils on top (some seasonally appropriate Halloween sprinkles, maybe), which would also give them a little bit of crunch to offset all that smoothness and cake. If that all sounds like it’ll delay the joy of just eating them, though, go for it. Just be aware that you, too, may find yourself having to ban yourself from consuming them.
