Trader Joe’s Confusing New Condiment Is Crunchy, Limey, and Oniony—but Is It Good?

Trader Joe’s Chili Onion Crunch is a cult favorite. People (especially people on TikTok) are ravenous for the crunchy, oily, oniony sauce. Now, Trader Joe’s is trying to have lightning strike twice with their new Crunchy Jalapeño Lime & Onion. This version has the same oily nature and crunchy texture, but the flavor is totally different.

Trader Joe’s Crunchy Jalapeño Lime & Onion

First of all, this is the worst name of any product on the planet. “Crunchy Jalapeño Lime & Onion”? Crunchy jalapeño lime and onion what?! That is a description of a product. Not the name of the products. Sadly, this oil is just as bad as its name. The hype around these crunch products from Trader Joe’s baffles me. They taste like old oil with flecks of dried onion skin. This version is better than the Chili Onion Crunch, though. The lime brings some tang to the table and the oil tastes less rancid. Don’t get me wrong: It’s still not good. More importantly, I cannot imagine what the proper use is for this product. Do I marinate meat in it? Do I dip stuff into it? I’ve seen people use it in place of chili oil and I think that is bonkers. Chili oil is so good and this, quite frankly, sucks.
