“Sit down, Wendy’s. Move over, McDonald’s. There’s a new spicy nugg in town.” That’s what I planned on saying to start off this review of new Trader Joe’s Spicy Chicken Nuggets. And I guess I technically still did…but like, not in a good way. I came up with that banger of an opener while I waited for my nugs to heat up. And I’ll admit, I got ahead of myself. I was just coming off of a review of their extremely delicious new Caesar Salad Dip, but I’m sad to report I’ve been reminded why we have an iffy relationship with Trader Joe’s here at Sporked. Their new products can be very hit-or-miss and I’m sad to report that we have another dud on our hands here.

Trader Joe’s Spicy Chicken Nuggets

Pros: Have you ever had chicken nuggets from a middle school cafeteria? Well, these chicken nuggets taste like school lunch, but spicy—and maybe that sounds good to you. They really do pack some heat that accumulates on your palate as you eat. And it is worth noting that the chicken is juicy and has an enjoyable texture. If only they had flavor!

Cons: Unremarkable. Unmemorable. Uninspiring. School cafeterias did it first and, frankly, they did it better. They really taste like almost nothing—I kept taking bites searching for flavor but only got heat. Get yourself a bag of Sporked’s favorite frozen chicken nuggets—which, coincidentally enough, are also sold at Trader Joe’s. Leave these on the shelf on your way to the real showstoppers.
