Welcome to Mythical Kitchen Picks, the series in which the culinary experts from Mythical Kitchen tell you all about their favorite foods and ingredients! We’re celebrating Uncle Sam(wich) week this week, so we asked the team of Kitcheneers for their favorite sandwich ingredients and sides. Today, Trevor Evarts lets us in on the jam to end all jams, and his favorite jam for sandwiches.
Trevor’s Pick: Homemade by Dorothy Huckleberry Jam
As a homegrown Idaho boy, there is one ingredient that I have loved above all others: organic, pure, huckleberry jam. Look, I’m known for being a guy with a whimsical, childlike disposition and ocean blue eyes. That means that I LOVE a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I might go so far as to argue that a peanut butter and jelly is the greatest sandwich ever. You may be doubtful, but if you can get your hands on some true huckleberry jam, slather that stuff on some Wonder bread with your choice of peanut butter, and you will be taken to a beautiful flavor landscape that embodies the spirit of the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
Huckleberries have a flavor similar to blueberries, but with a beautiful punch of tartness that you might get from a raspberry. Not only does this go well on a peanut butter and jelly, but also on a ham and jam sandwich. If you’re like me and you love a Monte Cristo, pair one with some delicious huckleberry jam. Let your taste buds be blown away by a fried ham and cheese sandwich, dipped in succulent and sweet Northwestern jam. I have been Trevor, and in the immortal words of Doc Holiday, I’m your huckleberry.
